Disclaimer: I don't own Hunger Games
Okay, changing it again! And before you read, yes, I realize this isn't the most realistic thing, but I'm thinking that Katniss has changed her opinions since the end of Mockingjay.
Katniss was sitting with her children, playing with her daughter's hair. Her husband was sitting next to her, reading. Soon, she knew, he would get up to take the breads out of the oven, then he would paint his cakes. She would grind up herbs for my mother, to send to her. The children, her children, would go off and play, then Katniss would resume her game of counting the dead. It was an okay life, but it seemed to be missing something. She had not seen Gale in years.
At first she'd thought she'd made the right decision, to be with Peeta. He was sweet, kind, and caring. He helped her get through each day. But he wasn't what she wanted, she now realized. She had loved Gale from the minute she'd first seen him, and he her, she knew. The games had confused her though, thrusting her in with Peeta. He had obviously cared about her, and he was so sweet. But now she realized she didn't want sweet. She wanted passion, romance, and fire! She was, after all, the girl who was on fire. She was a huntress, not a wife who sits aiding her husband. The games had changed her. She was sometimes bloodthirsty, and always wanted to get into the woods, which she had stopped doing to please her worried husband. Gale would never do that to her. She loved him, she knew for sure now. It was him! She didn't love Peeta, at least not like that. She wanted to run away with Gale, and be with him for the rest of her life. She wanted to be taken into his arms, and have him never let go. She wanted them to hunt together again. She would never forget the games with Peeta near her. When she saw him now, she saw only a boy, wounded beyond repair, weak. Katniss didn't want weak, she wanted power, strength, thanks to the games. Gale wouldn't have gotten hurt, he would have been stealthy, and they could have won without the horrors she dreamed about. Katniss wouldn't have become close with Rue. She wouldn't think of her and Prim every night. Prim would have lived if she hadn't chosen Peeta over Gale, she'd convinced herself. She would have gotten over Gale's involvement in the bomb. Peeta had ruined her family. Without him, her family would still be together, and they were what was most important to her.
She gets up, with tears running down her face. She wanted Gale.
