What If?
It's the ease with which James moves that Remus hates.
Never in his life could Remus ever act so cool, so confident, before a girl. Especially Lily Evans.
But of course, they're meant to be. So James can do whatever; Lily will still love him.
Remus won't say it, but he knows it's there. It isn't hate that he feels towards the couple. It's envy.
