She sank to the ground, one hand extended, as if to pull him back, but he was too far away to reach.
Countless minutes or hours of desolate heartbreak passed, before she heard another sound beyond her sobs. "Melissa?" This was Pippin. She turned towards his voice and saw him grinning, an unbitten apple halfway to his mouth.
Once he had perceived her sorrow, the path of the apple was altered, and it became a gift. Perhaps Pippin, in some still-innocent part of his hobbit mind, even now considered food to be the cure to all ills. But through a storm of dripping crystals and quivering lips, Melissa could not give the smile that this simple offering deserved.
"Why?" She clutched the apple, for there was nothing else, anymore, to hold to, and choked out the words her heart cried. "Why, Pippin? Why can he not love me back?"
"Legolas?" Pippin thought a moment. "He didn't tell you, then, that he was already married?"
