A/N: I subscribe to several word-of-the-day services, mostly for drabble inspiration. I try to stay away from fanfiction, but sometimes a word just clicks. I got the word accipitrine (having to do with birds of prey) a few hours after I finished watching MaLoki. Who am I to deny fate (aka, WOD)?

Warnings: Written at three AM. LokixHeimdall hints if you want them to be there.

Disclaimer: Matantei Loki Ragnarok (and the scene I -ahem- borrowed) belong to Kinoshita Sakura. The old myths belong to no one, but I did use Snorri Sturluson's Edda as a reference.

A Penchant for Falconing

Once upon a time, the trickster god Loki had a dispute with a certain eagle, and struck it soundly with his staff. Instead of the staff coming loose, the eagle flew away with Loki in tow. In order to buy release, Loki promised the eagle the apples of Idunn, the key to the gods' immortality. Lacking the apples, the gods grew old, and Loki was forced to retrieve them in the form of a hawk...

Heimdall watches the hawk circle in the pale morning light from his window niche. "How beautiful..."

He does not question his tendencies towards the accipitrine.

Please review even though my author's notes are twice as long as the actual drabble.
