I'll be the one
"Mama, when will I die?" asks Eren as her mother is silently tucking her under the covers. She watches as the smile on her mother's face promptly fades but then it shows up again after a few seconds later.
Her mother's eyes finds hers and stays there for few more seconds. She's like conveying something through that look. And the very young Eren doesn't quite understand yet.
"I don't know, Eren. That's not for us to decide," the mother simply says as she sits properly beside Eren.
"Not for us, then who?"
Eren's eyes are twinkling with curiosity. Carla stares at them closely, she is fighting the urge to wrinkle her brows at her daughter's current mood.
"Somebody," she breathes out, "Why do you want to know?"
"Because I heard from someone that when we die, we disappear. We're gone forever. Like, there's no going back. Is it true?" Now his voice is starting to quiver, but not enough to tell if the young one is scared or just confused.
Carla searches for his hands underneath the covers and holds them between her own while her other hand gently strokes Eren's cheek, "It's true. When we die, there's no going back. We'll be gone forever. But don't worry, sweetheart, you're not going to die any time soon. I promise you that."
She smiles tenderly at Eren.
Eren immediately reflects the smile, but his once confused look comes back as soon as it left, "But when that day comes and I die, you will be sad. Mama will be all alone. I don't wanna leave you. I don't want that."
Carla has to blink multiple times to fight the urge of tearing up, while she forces to continue smiling. She swallowed a sob, "Of course, I will be sad," she cups Eren's face, "But mama's strong, isn't she? I can take it. You don't have to worry on what will happen to mama once you're gone, okay? As long as Eren has lived his life to the fullest and without any regrets, I will be strong."
Eren suddenly wraps his arms around his mother's neck and buries his face into Carla's neck, "I will be strong too! I want to live forever and not die." He releases themselves from the embrace and holds his mother's face in each of his small palms, "Mama, I wanna be with you forever."
