It didn't feel like winning. There was no celebration or uplifting speech. No big cheers of victory. There was nothing but empty hearts and blackened earth. Large pillars of crystal had fallen to the side. Pools of grimm were dried and empty. Four dull relics lay scattered across the barren battle field. Everything was for nothing. Humanity was judged as a failure. Salem did all of this just to bring them back to Remnant. The Gods found humanity lacking. As if they had a right to judge. Of course humanity fought back, yet it wasn't enough.
Oscar had screamed for her to run as he was torn apart from the inside out by the God of Light. Ozpin was torn from his latest host into his original body. His final act in the world was to confessed he'd never stopped loving Salem. It broke her. The queen of the grimm shattered into pieces by his words. Looking back on it now she knew that was what saved her life. Ozpin had saved her with the confession. She still hated seeing him die though. Despite all the lies he was still her mentor. Their commander.
When the God of Darkness turned his attention to the world intending to wipe out humanity again, Cinder had acted the fastest. Using the power of all four maidens she protected both her allies and enemies alike. The woman who only wanted power had saved the very people she hated. She'd fallen to the ground weak and helpless and at that moment Salem had made her choice. She stepped in front of the final eight humans in the world and channeled the power of The God's using the relics to seal them away in a pocket dimension. The cost had been her life. Finally getting her wish the grimm queen had died saving them. Ruby held her as she died offering her what little comfort she could. Although it wasn't much. She wished she could do more as she turned to her companions.
Jaune was alone as he sat his face buried in his hands. He'd lost Pyrrha at Beacon. The woman he loved more than he'd realized until it was too late. He would have loved to kill Cinder for taking her but honestly, there was no point anymore. He'd lost everything. Nora had died at Weiss' welcome home ball at Atlas. Poisoned by Tyrian. Ren had spiraled. He became ruthless and eventually died killing Hazel. When Atlas fell so did Jaune's brother and sister. He'd been too weak to save them and now was paying for it. He could still feel the blood on his hands and the pain in his body. All of it was clear as day. Looking over at his broken sword he was almost happy it was gone because he never wanted to fight again.
Emerald shook as she clung to Cinder. Fear, uncertainty, and anguish ran through her eyes. They'd been on the wrong side of the war. She'd killed for her mother figure. Been soaked in blood to please the first person who gave her a chance to be something more than a thief. And it'd been for nothing. The only thing to come of this was a broken dream and shattered spirits. She'd fought for Cinder because she gave her a home. For Mercury because he made her smile. She would die for them. Yet now they were all going to die together. All she wanted to do was curl into a ball and cry. This wasn't what she wanted. Nothing was how it should be.
Weiss leaned against her blade the once shinning metal dented and warped. Her family was dead. Whitley had fallen first, killed by their father when he spoke out in her defense. Realizing what he'd done her father had shot himself. In their final moments as a family, she'd told him she hated him. If only she could take it back. Mother sat drinking in the garden as Atlas fell. They found her body in the rubble. Winter went last killed by Mercury. She died defending the survivors with Qrow. They died together and it had almost broken both Ruby and Weiss. But she'd stood back up and fought until this point. She no longer cared about her name or her bloodline. The only things that mattered were her sisters and brothers. Forehead resting against the cold steel of her blade she didn't even realize she was crying.
Mercury didn't regret much, but standing guard over his family he wanted to turn back time. The killing didn't matter to him at all. He was okay with getting blood on his hands. He fought for his sisters. For himself. But he would go back to the moment they met and shake Cinder until she gave up on Salem's plan. He would change fate to bring back the world. The killing was all he was good for but now he was just tired. The world was dead. Looking down at Cinder's weak body he hated himself for allowing this to happen.
Blake had fallen to her knees. Her ears pressed against her head as she sobbed into her hands. Everything was gone. Her parents, her people, her home. She'd tried so hard to save them and nothing she did amounted to anything. Feeling arms wrap around her she leaned into Yang. Her sister in all but blood. Adam was gone. Killed by her at Argus when he bought them time to escape a hoard of grimm. He'd apologized then pushed her onto the airship. She'd seen him be torn apart. It had hurt so much that she almost stopped breathing. Now here she was feeling that same pain only a million times worse. Clinging to Yang she whimpered the other girl running her hand along Blake's back.
Cinder had fought and clawed her way to where she was. Giving up dreams and love to get to this point. But it didn't even matter. Her hand clung tightly to Emerald feeling the girl shake in her arms. Hate was all she could feel all of it aimed at herself. She'd hunted down and killed Amber. Torn Raven apart feather by feather. Murdered the winter maiden and butchered the summer. She'd done it all to feel powerful enough to protect herself. So that she was never hurt again. In the process, she'd met Emerald who became her daughter and Mercury who became her brother. She'd do anything to keep them safe. She only hoped that when the time came they would understand.
Yang missed her father. She wanted to see her mother again. She might be strong and powerful but she felt like a child. Curbing her temper was meant to make her strong. It hadn't she'd still lost to Watts. Had to be saved by her father who killed the mad doctor at the cost of his own life. Everything she was turned out to be lie she told herself. She wasn't strong, at least not when it counted. As she held her sobbing teammate she wanted nothing more than to cry herself.
Ruby lowered Salem's body to the ground slowly. She'd fought so hard. Wanted to become one of the heroes from the story books. But they don't exist. Heroes are for fairy tales and bedtime stories. They fought a war for six years only to lose everything. Raising her hand up to clutch the red scarf around her neck she held back her tears. It was all that remained of her father. Qrow. He'd given it to her during his final moments to replace her cloak that was burned to ashes. And in those same moments, he'd told her who he really was. For the longest time, she hadn't understood why. Now she did, after losing everything. The scar on her back from Tyrian burned as she stood. He might have taken her father but she took his life. Somehow it still didn't seem fair. Crescent Rose was gone. Her beautiful scythe broken in half by Salem.
"I'm sorry," she said softly gaining their attention. Seeing the tears in Weiss' eyes she faltered. Weiss was the strongest of them. She never cried. To see her so broken was horrid. Taking a deep breath Ruby said, "if I'd been stronger or faster than this would never have happened."
They were silent. Every one of them able to hear the self hate in her voice. The broken look in her eyes as she tugged at the hem of her shirt. Their twenty one year old leader was hurting so much that it radiated off her. Cinder looked away. The guilt she felt almost overwhelming.
"Bullshit," Jaune snapped looking up with dry eyes. Slamming his fist against his shield he stood saying, "We were fighting against Gods. None of us could have stopped this. Hell, all this even started because of Ozpin so lets blame him for it all!"
Ruby flinched at the shout stepping back slightly. Angry Jaune was like a honey badger who just got poked with a stick too many times. Watching him begin to pace and grumble she moved forward to help Weiss to her feet. Holding out her hand to the woman. Weiss blinked wiping away her tears before taking her leaders hand. Stumbling slightly she fell into Ruby's arms hugging the younger woman tightly. All they had was each other in a barren world. Humanity might come back someday but they wouldn't be around to see it.
"None of this is your fault," Weiss whispered. Ruby tightened her grip. She had to stay strong for everyone who needed her. She couldn't fall apart. Not now when they had no idea what to do. But hearing those words broke her completely. Choking she clung to her partner. Feeling Weiss begin to brush her fingers through her hair, Ruby buried her face in the other woman's neck. It hurt so much that it burned. She'd failed them all. They'd trusted her and she failed. If they could blame her then maybe it wouldn't hurt as much.
Cinder saw a flicker in the relic of creation. A light blue glow. Handing Emerald over to Mercury she stood. Walking to the relic she felt everyone's eyes on her. Reaching out she picked it up feeling it resonate with the magic inside her body. It was like a light being turned on for the first time ever. The blue crystal at the tip of the scepter called out to her telling her everything she wanted to know. But the solution would come at a price. One she would have to pay. And she would pay it without question.
"Cin," Emerald asked confusion in her voice even as she pressed closer to Mercury. The man held her tightly his eyes never leaving Cinder. But the woman only had eyes for Ruby. Meeting the silver orbs that took so much from her she knew this was the right thing to do. The only way to keep all of them alive. Ruby stepped away from Weiss reaching up to wipe away her tears.
"I killed Penny, Pyrrha, Amber and so many others that I lost count. Salem promised me power and I took that promise because I never wanted to feel weak again," Cinder stated never taking her eyes from Ruby. Jaune growled at them mention of his girlfriend's death while Ruby looked at the ground when Penny was mentioned. Cinder sighed saying, "Neo died for me. Nothing I can do will change or absolve my sins. I'm hell bound, but your not. I have a way out of this."
Ruby's head snapped up. Her silver eyes going to the scepter in Cinders hand. The sad smile on the woman's face filled her with dread. Before she could stop her Cinder tapped the crystal against the ground. Lines of blue twisted from the tip across the ground forming a weaved circle around them that reminded her of Weiss' summoning glyphs.
"Cinder," Emerald shouted bolting out of Mercury's hold. Crashing against a blue transparent barrier she fell back as tears stung her eyes.
"I'm sorry," Cinder stated her own tears threatening to fall. Mercury took a step forward pressing his hand against the wall. Face dropping in sorrow he wanted to scream.
"I love you," he said simply. He knew this was a goodbye. Otherwise, she wouldn't look so sad. Ruby rushed forward to stand at his side.
"Cinder don't do this! We don't have to leave anyone behind," she begged. The woman smirked at the girls words.
"I'm already dead Little Red," she said softly. It was true. She could feel the taint of the grimm consuming her body. Soon there would be nothing left of her. She would not make her family watch her die. Shooting up Emerald hit the barrier trying to get to her. Face twisting in anguish Cinder pressed her hand against the barrier as Emerald gave up. Laying her hand against the older woman's she sobbed. Mercury didn't hide his tears even as they ran silently down his face. Smiling at them she said, "I love both of you."
Finally, the circle glowed one time before the earth vanished leaving a black void in its place. Watching them fall through the void, she never lost her smile. The scepter dropped from her hand as the ground returned. Falling forward she crumbled to her knees. The maiden powers she'd used to fuel the magic burning through her body like lava. She didn't even get a chance to scream before died.
Cinder fall died with a smile on her face having sent the ones she loved to a new world. She didn't know where they would land or what the world would be like. But she knew it was a chance for them to survive. That was all she wanted. One chance. One hope. It was something she'd never gotten.
Remnant was dead. No grimm. No humans. No faunus. Just a world of charred earth waiting to crumble to dust. Seven survivors sent hurtling through the sands of reality on the wishes of a dying woman. Each of them would land at a different point. Each would experience a different fate. Yet ties are not easily broken.
This is a story about loyalty and reunions. The darkness of the world that will show just how far they're willing to go to save those they love. Hope and horror intertwine. Love and loss. Pride and sorry. Every moment ripples across fate drawing them closer to each other.
