Chapter 1: Love is a Game
"All it takes to get someone to fall in love with you is playing the right game pieces." A young college student murmurs to herself.
The surrounding is filled with bright colors and sweet smells of tea and cookies. The three students sit at a table outside of the café. One look and you would have thought that the three were just strangers that ended up at the same table, but when you watch them it is obvious that they have a close friendship.
The girl closest to the picketed white fence is a long haired beauty, who's hair gently flows along with the breeze. She is wearing a simple yet elegant white blouse and a black suit skirt. Her cream colored fingers and nude coated nails elegantly hold the handle of her traditionally designed china teacup filled with hot sweetened black tea. The aura about her gives off a sense of confidence and pride. Beside her, a beautiful short haired girl, sits wearing a flowered summer dress gently flowing with the wind at the edges near her knees. Her pale skin contrasts with the light tiffany blue nail polish that adorns her fingers that wrap around the clear cup of warm jasmine tea. She gives off that feeling of happiness and innocence that calms ones nerves. The third girl sits quietly admiring the flowers. She holds a beauty that neither of the two girls contained. With her rich wavy dark brown hair tied in a high ponytail and the simple purple dress, she had the aura of a mature woman. Her fingers that hold the straw to her traditional green tea show neatly cut uncolored nails.
The short haired student talks about love with great enthusiasm while the brunette silently listens with a smile. But the girl with long flowing hair looks off at the people walking by disinterested in the conversation. Her blue eyes glance from place to place with slow motion looking for something to catch her interest, and then a loud voice pikes her curiosity through the soft bustling of the street.
"Jessica!" a man wearing a classic black business suit calls.
The young woman he is talking to does not turn around, but speeds up her strides.
"Jessica! Honey…" The young woman suddenly turns around to face the man. With a fierce look of irritation plastered on her otherwise beautiful face, she slaps him so hard that the sound echoes throughout the area making the other two girls look over questionably at what just happened.
"Stop following me! I can't stand you. You sicken me. Do you have any idea why I want to break up with you?! It was because I found someone better. So stop embarrassing me. And never, ever talk to me again. I don't like people thinking that I had ever associated with the like of you!" The young woman storms off.
The three turn back to their tea and return to their conversation.
The long haired girl that had witnessed all that had happened scoffs and murmurs, "I was right."
The burnet looks over, "Kagome? what are you mumbling?"
I said, "Those people have proved my philosophy, love is simply a game."
The burnet and short haired girl look at each other, not understanding Kagome's thought.
"Look. What I'm saying is that if you don't play the right pieces and do the right things, the romantic feeling will not last. I feel bad for that guy, truly I do, but can you blame her? I mean he is too clinging and appears too desperate. He probably has no mysterious aspect to him, no confidence, no interesting background, and no outstanding aspect. All of that plays against him to make him look like a horrible mess. I am willing to bet that he was the one that asked her out first and kept asking her until she grew tired and gave in. Then when some other guy caught the her attention she decided that she didn't want to be tied down to that man."
"Kagome, that's really harsh. He doesn't look bad. He is just ... very normal and loves her a lot. She is lucky to have him as a boyfriend." The student's short haired friend says.
"Oh? Then you go over there and become his girlfriend." Kagome says looking away from the scene to give her friend a daring look.
"…but…I don't know him." The friend says trying to make it seem like she was not shaken.
"No, you don't like that type of guy either. I mean yes he is neat and seems nice, but he just does not have that "image" that all girls dream of. Which again proves my point, there is no such thing as true love. It is a myth a hokes people say to try and make their life seem perfect. Trust me Rin. I've observed enough people to say that my belief on love is true."
"I agree. Rin, Kagome may have stated it harshly, but her ideology seems right. I've been in three relationships and yet not one has lasted more than a month." the beautiful chocolate brown haired girl says as she picks up her glass's straw and brings it to her lips.
Rin looked at her two friends saddened and angry, "Sango! Weren't you two the ones that told me that I could find true love? Didn't you say that…"
"Rin," Sango cut off Rin's words, "we did say that. And we did mean what we said. We wish for your well being and hope for your true love to come along, but we honestly don't believe in that idea when it comes to reality. I mean, I used to believe and fanaticize about the day when a "prince" would come along but I'm already 20."
"Okay, so I can see where you have the right to say that, but Kagome has no right." Rin looks toward Kagome, "You haven't even dated anyone!"
"Rin," Kagome sighed as she put down her tea cup, "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings; I was just saying what I have observed. You know me. I like people watching. I have no background on psychology, or anything of that kind. I plan to be a doctor not a psychiatrist. So please don't take my words to heart. I have no proof, but I will say this; I don't think any guy is worth my time and effort. I don't wish for the distraction and the annoyance that comes with relationships, especially because I have Doctor's Degree to get and a career to focus on."
Rin looks at Kagome silently with eyes that hold great sadness.
"Rin," Sango says, "don't listen to Kagome's observations she is just an irritable 19 year old. You are just 18. Keep dreaming and prove her wrong. After all, just because I failed to do so doesn't mean that you will."
Hearing Sango's encouraging words Rin's smile returns, "Thanks Sango, you're the best!"
Kagome smiles as she watches Rin's joyful manner and Sango's mother-like gentleness.
