Broken Wings

[A/N: This is actually a good non-serial fic. I mean, "One Step Forward, Never Look Back" was okay but in my opinion, a little bit too dramatic. And then, "Hallucinations" sucked. I know, I'm spamming myself, but hey, it did suck. For this one, I actually like it, although it's still a bit dramatic. It's all a matter of opinion. Enjoy!]

Rachel sat in a cell, hair messy, clothes torn. The Yeerks had finally captured her. Finally. The last of the Animorphs. She laughed bitterly. All those times . . . flying out with Tobias. Flying, soaring, so high. Gliding on thermals. The joy of being free. All gone now. A fading memory.

She looked at the only thing she had: a razor. She could kill herself so easily. But Tobias had always taught her that life was a gift and was to be treasured always. Rachel swallowed. Tobias had died . . . for her. He had taken the fatal blow.

"Tobias!" Rachel cried. There was blood all over him.

{Listen,} said Tobias, {I'm not going to make it. My . . . wings are broken. My . . . ribcage has dug into . . . my heart.} His strength was ebbing away.

"No, Tobias, no!" she knelt down next to him.

{Rachel . . . promise me . . . keep on fighting . . . for me. Remember that . . . life is the best gift I can ever give you. Rachel . . . I love you.} He gave a final shudder, and just as he lay limp, a tear splattered down onto his beak.

"I promise, Tobias, and I'll always love you. Always." She kissed the straggly feathers for the last time, buried him, and wept.

Rachel laughed again. What did the promise matter anymore? She wasn't keeping it. But the Yeerks would get her anyway . . . she was too weak now, from starvation and malnutrition to fight. It didn't matter . . . did it? Freedom was all that mattered, right?

When a hawk's wings are broken, he's gone for good. He can't fly, hunt, or do anything. He would just die, because without freedom, life is nothing. A hawk is freedom. But soon, thought Rachel, soon they would be together again.

She picked up the razor with a quivering hand and slowly raised it to her throat. Oh Tobias, she prayed, please forgive me, but I have to do this. Please, oh please, Tobias. She saw a dove flying towards the heavens and felt sure Tobias would receive her message.

She closed her eyes.

Broken Wings, she thought, broken wings.

For you, Tobias, always for you, forever.

And as she closed her eyes for the last time, a tear rolled down her cheek.

I will always be there for you. Always and forever, above and beyond.

Two hawks flew upwards toward the sun, circling. One with scars on its wings, the other with a scar on its throat.

Broken wings, now healed, bleeding hearts, now mended.

Broken Wings . . .
