Dean's eyes flickered open to look up at the hospital ceiling.
"Sam?!" He called out, before he was even really conscious. A gentle hand touched his shoulder reassuringly.
"Dean" Sam said. He had bandages wrapped around his head over one eye and his arm was in a sling. Dean tried to sit up, to further evaluate how much damage had been done, but winced in pain.
"Aw! Son of a bitch"
"Hey, take it easy." Sam said "You just came out of major surgery. It was kind of touch and go there for a while."
"Did we get him?" Dean asked. He already knew the answer. He had seen it with his own eyes before he blacked out. Sam smiled
"Yeah, we got him"
"Cas?" Dean asked. He already knew this answer too, but he still had to ask. The question stabbed at Sam like a knife and sudden grief washed over his face, giving Dean his answer.
"God Damn it Cas, you child." Dean whispered up at the tiles on the ceiling, his eyes stinging with tears that refused to fall.
"I've never understood why you keep referring to me like that." Came a gruff low voice from the corner of the room "I've told you, I am millions of years old."
"Cas!" Sam cried out, shock on his face replaced by a wide grin. He stood up and practically fell on the man in the tan trench coat, enveloping him in a one armed hug. Dean tried to get up again, forgetting the outcome of his last attempt not 6 seconds earlier, and fell back on to his pillow with a painful wince.
"But I don't understand." Sam said searching the angels blue eyes. "We saw you die!"
Cas shrugged.
"Wouldn't be the first time. Who knows, maybe Gods not done with me after all."
"err….., Cas!" Dean said through gritted teeth. Blood was seeping through a bandage on his chest and leaking out of the dressing. Castiel placed a hand on his chest and there was a flash of white light. Dean breathed in deeply, the pain suddenly gone. Cas then turned to Sam, reaching up to put his palm on the taller man's forehead, and there was a similar blast of light. Sam wormed out of the cast and took the bandages off his head.
"Thanks Cas" He said
"Yeah Cas." Dean said sitting up and making eye contact with the Angel "Thank you" They looked at each other deeply for a moment, and Castiel got the message, nodding.
"Thank you Dean." He said sincerely.
"Do you have to go?" Dean asked "Man you know you're always welcome with us." Cas smiled
"I know, but I still have a lot of loose ends to clear up." He sighed "But don't think that means I won't be keeping a close eye on you two."
"See you around Cas." Dean said
Sam tossed Dean his clothes, which he quickly changed into.
"Come on, let's get out of here before the nurse notices" Dean said and the two of them walked out of the hospital. The impala was still where they had left her, a short walk away. As they walked, Sam turned to dean.
"We really did it, didn't we? Face all the big bads, been through heaven, hell and everything in between, and we're still alive."
"Yeah" Dean said. "I guess nobody saw that coming."
"No more Demons, no more leviathan and no more angels. So, what do we do now?"
"Well, Garth said he was hunting a wendigo in North Carolina. If you give him the puppy dog eyes, I bet he would let us in on the hunt."
"What, I don't have puppy dog eyes" Sam said incredulously
"Dude you so have puppy dog eyes, always have"
"Jerk" Sam said, nudging Dean as they walked.
"Bitch." Dean said back. They both smiled, looking forward to wherever the road ahead took them
