"You know you're supposed to be in your common room right now," Lily said, startling the first year leaning against the wall that had apparently not seen Lily.

"I'd hate to give you a detention," Lily continued sweetly, "But I will."

The first year blushed, nodded and started a quick walk towards Ravenclaw Tower. Lily smiled and turned to walk down the long hall.

"Lily," a soft, almost inaudible voice whispered behind her.

Lily turned and was then looking into the eyes of Severus Snape. Her eyes narrowed.

"Snape, you're supposed to be in your common room." Lily said with contempt in her voice.

"I know, but Lily I need to talk to you." Severus replied, slightly louder than before.

"Snape, I told you go to your common room."

"Lily, please," Severus pleaded, slinking closer towards her.

"Do you want a detention? Just go!"

"Just give me a second, that's all,"

"I'm calling James."

Before she could do anything, Severus blurted out, "I love you!"

The words seemed to echo in the empty halls, and Severus resisted the urge to hide his flushed face to keep eye contact with the girl that he had loved since he was nine years old.

"Severus, don't,"

"I - I've always loved you."

"Liar!" Lily growled.

"No, I have. I still do. I love you." Severus repeated the fact.

"I love James."

"Why? How can you stand that arrogant idiot? I hate seeing you with him; you deserve so much better, Lils."

Severus grabbed her hand, but Lily quickly shoved him back, separating the two.

"Don't say that about James."

"Lily, I can't stand knowing you're dating that git, it tears me apart,"

Lily glared at him and clenched her fists tightly.

"How do you think I feel, Severus? Dropping hints every second, throwing myself at you every chance I got, and all you did was push me away." Lily's eyes pricked with tears, "I always tried to hold your hand or put my arm around you or just get closer to you and every single time you backed away. All you ever did was reject me."

Lily's tears were now falling freely and Severus stared at her, open mouthed. That's what she was doing? Trying to be closer to me? His mind flashed to all the times that Lily's hand had brushed his and he had pulled his hand back in embarrassment. All the times that she had hugged him and he had tensed up, nervous, afraid that he would take things the wrong way. Wrapped in his thoughts, he seemed oblivious to Lily. A loud sniffle brought him back into the corridor, with Lily in front of him, sobbing, but still as beautiful as she'd ever been.

"Lily, I never meant to hurt you." Severus stepped forward, again, to wipe the tears from her face.

"Don't!" Lily pushed his hand away and wiped her eyes with the sleeve of her robes.

"Just give me one more chance."

"You've had your chances. I gave James a chance and he took it."

"I just wish I could do everything over…" Severus said, pulling at his hair.

"It's too late for that now, Severus."

Severus sunk to his knees and buried his head in his hands.

"Goodbye, Snape."

Severus looked up to watch the only woman he'd ever love walk away from him for the last time.
