Be safe.

This unneeded warning rang in my head over and over again. How could a mother honestly say this to her daughter knowing where she was sending her was no where near safe.

I won't beat around the bush and leave you hanging. I'm Melody Braswell daughter of Hailey Braswell and some Greek god who hasn't even bothered to claim me. For all of you dip thongs who haven't bothered to read Percy Jackson, I'll fill you in by saying yes the gods are real and yes they have children with mortals. Most kids find out who their parent (godly parent) is by about age 13. Some poor saps like me get left in the dark. Sometimes they go without ever knowing.

Now I could give you the boring details of how I grew up being attacked by monsters with my mother worrying over me constantly and my grades never showing a promising future blah, blah, blah. Most likely, though, you already know this. These are the obvious traits of a demigod. The real story begins in the summer during The Second Titan War. I might not be too happy with the gods, specifically my good for nothing father but my fellow demigods are another story. They accepted me and protected me and for that I owe camp half-blood and a select few demigods my unfailing loyalty. As my mother pulled up to the bottom of half-blood hill I saw a few of those particular demigods standing and waiting for me at the top.

I turned to see my mother's face set in stone as she watched me grab my duffel bags. I gave her on last goodbye look and she returned it yet we exchanged no words. She had already said what she wanted me to know earlier. "So you're really going year round now?" I remembered the note of disbelief in her voice, the hurt. I could only nod in reply. She had swallowed hard and gripped the steering wheel tighter. "If this is to protect me then it's not worth it."

"That's only part of the reason mom. There's also the fact that I'm 17 and don't even know who my father is." she bit her lip. "I need to find out more about myself and let's be honest I had no chance of getting into college." she didn't disagree with me.

She sighed and she got the look in her eyes. She got this way when I asked about dad or I had a run in with a monster at school and come home bloodied. "I love you Melody and just promise me that you'll try to be safe."

"I promise."

As I was about to exit the car I saw that promise in her eyes. I watched it spill along with tears that began to flow down her cheeks. As I turned and ran up the hill I could almost here her as she drove away whispering: Be safe.
