~Mare~
As much as I try, I can't seem to keep my eyes off of Cal, as he sits across from me, dark circles haunting his eyes as he stares at the floor. The truth is that I actually feel sorry for him, he's lost everything and everyone he loved. He notices me staring and meets my gaze and I peel my eyes away to Kilorn.
I can't believe he's still alive, the memory flashes back in my head, I thought I lost everything, Cal, my family, and Kilorn. He all but smirks at me and chuckles, he always seems to find humor in everything.
Farley hands me a red scarf with the Scarlet Guard symbol on it, I suddenly remember Gisa, her hands dancing across fabric, creating the most beautiful designs. "You better put it on if you don't want to die," she teases "little lightning girl." I flinch at the mention of the name that I am most recognized for. I finally reach out for the scarf and wrap it around my head so that only my eyes are visible. Everyone does the same, even Cal. He looks so tired, our eyes meet for a second and I realize why he hasn't broke free, he could just melt the chains with his flame, instead his eyes scream that he's done, he's done fighting.
I can't blame him, he has nothing to fight for anymore. But I still have to fight, the war is just beginning, and soon Maven and his beloved mother would kneel as we did for them. I force a smile to cheer up Cal, to tell him that he's not alone, i'm still with him, even though he betrayed me and I betrayed him.
Farley starts shouting orders to the soldiers as the underground train comes to a stop. Cal finally raises his head, "That's not going to lead you anywhere but to prison" he says it so low, that we could've missed it. But not Farley, she never misses anything, and glares at Cal. "Keep your mouth shut, little prince" she barks. Cal doesn't react, he just keeps his gaze on me.
Shade is the first one out of the train, followed by the soldiers, leaving me, Cal, and Farley behind. Farley shuts down the train, and I feel the only thing that was comforting me slowly die. I call for my lightning just enough to keep me calm. Cal notices my anxiety and starts walking towards me as Farley jumps out of the train.
I'm greeted by the familiar heat as Cal flops down besides me, he starts to melt the chains. "Do you trust them?" It sounds wrong, but I still manage to say it. After a while, he just scoffs, "What other choice do I have? Tell me Mare, what else is there to do in this world?" it starts to get really hot, as I shift onto the seat besides me. Then he realizes his temper and drops the heat, "I lost everything Mare" he says in a whisper.
"But not me" I say, and he gives me the saddest smile.
