The wind is rushing past his ears as he plummets down, down into the sea until CRASH, the whistling is smothered by the crush of water. The impact is bigger than he remembers, and Emmet gasps as he goes under, his breath bubbling out. He watches with a smile as all the air he has floats blithely up to the surface, and feels utterly calm. He can't breathe.
Suddenly, he's grabbed- first by one arm, then underneath both arms, and he's being pulled back up towards the surface. When he and his saviour come up, Emmet's gasping and choking, his lungs simultaneously trying to expel water and suck up air.
"Vhat ze hell vere you doing?"
The lack of oxygen is making him light-headed.
"Vhat ze hell did you zhink you vere doing?"
Emmet turns his head and smiles at his brother, who looks confused and terrified and utterly furious with him. "I vas... doing ze svimming, ja?" Emmet's tone is not as light as he'd like it to be- his voice is still hoarse from lack of air.
"Bruder."
Emmet just smiles and relaxes, letting himself float on the surface of the water. He can tell by the way Ingo grabs his arm that it's only making him madder.
"Bruder." Ingo's voice is measured, calculated- he's holding in his anger, trying not to let his frustration with Emmet's antics get the better of him. "You vere just letting yourself drown. You could have died."
Emmet's smile grows a little wider, and he swims closer to his brother, grabbing him by the soaked lapels of his white button-up shirt. He can see the color of his brother's pale skin through the sopping fabric, and the strips of hair that dangle into Ingo's face make Emmet feel the tiniest prinpricks of satisfaction.
"Nien, bruder, I vould not have done ze dying." Emmet is smiling too wide, the sort of smile that unnerves normal people. His brother doesn't flinch. "Because I knew bruder vould jump in to get me. Bruder is alvays vatching over me. Zhat is vhy I did it." Ingo's expression is even more priceless now; Emmet can't help but laugh. "I did it so zhat I could see zhat kind of face on you, bruder. Zhose faces are ze best."
