Asking
A/N: Just something that came into my head while watching the new Nine-Nine.

It was 11 o'clock; the day before Halloween. Captain Raymond Holt was planning to spend all day going over his plans for this year's Halloween heist. That is, until Detective Jake Peralta waltzed into his office that morning while he was putting the finishing touches to his strategy.
"Knock, knock," Jake said as he approached the doorway, knowing how much Holt hated it when people said that instead of knocking with their hands. "Hey there, Cap-i-tain. Mind if I talk to you for a sec?"
The older man took off his glasses, sighing at his interrupted work and suspecting the detective was there to boast about the next day's events.
"What is it Peralta? I'm busy finishing off my plans to defeat you in tomorrow's battle!"
"It's really important, I promise." This time, Jake sounded nervous and serious, his voice losing its usual joking demeanour. Add that to the fact that he had closed the door and was nervously wringing his hands, it seemed clear that what he had come to talk about was no laughing matter.
Jake drew in a shaky breath, summoned up his courage, and began explaining why he was there, "Captain, I wanted to ask you something. It's quite important and I don't really know how to say it…"
"Get on with it, Peralta!"
"I think of you as kind of a father figure, and I know Amy looks up to you a lot and that you think of us detectives as your surrogate children- don't deny it, you know you do-" the Captain smirked, now directing all of his attention to the man standing anxiously in front of him, still oblivious to what he would ask him that was so important.
"Anyway, I wanted to ask you, well not ask you, per say, but you know… okay, here goes… I want to propose to Amy and I can't do it without your blessing."
Holt froze. Of all the possibilities, he hadn't been expecting this. Of course, he assumed that it would happen at some point (he thought it was clear those two would end up together eventually) but he hadn't seen it coming for the near future. In hindsight, he should have; what with Jake just being released from prison and the almost three years that Jake and Amy had been dating. Nevertheless, it shocked him and it took him a second to regain his composure. The expression on Jake's face was one of worry and anticipation- the moment it took Holt to absorb the news only deepening his anxiety.
After a beat, Raymond's face broke out in a wide, genuine smile: very unlike him. His voice was soft and sincere when he said, "Of course, Jake. I wish you the best of luck! I'm thrilled you've finally seen sense and decided to, as the song goes, 'put a ring on it'"
Xxxxxxxxxx
That evening, when the squad was at the bar celebrating the Peraltiago engagement, Holt watched the couple laughing and drinking, Amy's glance going down to the ring every few minutes, admiring it and smiling to herself. He smirked, seeing Boyle fawn over his friends, every so often having to sit down to avoid fainting again with excitement. He knew Jake had matured tremendously whilst being with Amy, and that they both made each other better; he just wondered whether Charles would actually get any work done over the next few months, or would spend every possible moment planning and gushing over the wedding.
