"Okay, you were right," Astrid said, setting her plate on the table.
"Right about what?" Hiccup questioned.
"That we would still be seeing each other in 5 years time."
Hiccup grinned.
"Well, my dog knocked you over, I was myself and said something stupid, and still you gave me your number. I think that miracle in itself was enough to tell me you we're going to stick around for a while."
Astrid laughed.
They had been on several dates over the past 5 years and 2 years ago, they had moved into a small apartment together. Toothless and Stormfly, their dogs, had got along like a house on fire, Toothless still speaking of his fellow humans in despair, as they continued, in his eyes, pointless human rituals of life. What use was with that thing they did, sitting on that soft squashy thing, that, admittedly, was quite comfortable, and watching the big, flat thing, looking at more useless humans do things?
"Hey, I, uh, got a surprise for you," Hiccup said to Astrid, setting his cutlery on his empty plate.
"Hmm? What is it?"
"We have to go outside."
Astrid glanced out of the window.
"Now?"
"Yeah, we have to get going now."
"Okay…"
As they left, Hiccup patted the small black box in his coat pocket to make sure it as there. Hopefully, everything will go according to plan…
When they arrived at the beach, the sun had just started to set, casting a warm orange glow on the soft sand.
"Oh, this is beautiful!" Astrid said.
"Almost as beautiful as you are." Hiccup replied, grinning lopsidedly.
Astrid's cheeks went pink. She nudged him.
"Stop being so cheesy and cute." She mumbled.
"Nope, sorry, can't help it."
They walked in silence for a while, admiring the view of the sun dipping behind the sea.
Then Hiccup stopped.
"What's up?" Astrid asked, stopping next to him.
Hiccup took a deep breath.
"Astrid, we've known each other for 5 years now, and they have been some of the best years of my life, and I hope to spend many more with you by my side, so," Hiccup got down on one knee, ignored the slight ache from his stump, took the black ring box out of his coat pocket, and opened it.
"Will you marry me?"
There was only one word running through Astrid's head.
"Yes."
