Cannon Universe - 1st year

Losing Control

The silver glared angrily against the bright sun. The word master inscribed in blue ink, another painful reminder of her muggle heritage.

"This is ridiculous! Who in their right mind would be dense enough to lock themselves out of anything? " Hermoine mumbled to herself.

The textbook sitting in her lap did not have precise enough directions in order for a witch or wizard in his or her first year to master the charm.

"Okay. Let's start this again."

Step 1: Visually inspect the lock.

Step 2: Place your hand on the lock. Assess the material, age, and intent of the object.

Step 3: Allow the object to fill your thought. Connect with your magical aura and allow it to surround the object.

Step 4: Determine your purpose and chant the word alohomora

She squeezed her eyes, pointed her wand at the lock, and mummbled alohomora.

Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

Oh for goodness sake! Even Ron got this on the first try! I am doing everything right. I don't understand!

Out of the corner of her eye, she watched apprehensively as her new found friend walked casually towards the spot she was sitting.

"Hey Hermoine! Would you like to eat lunch with me and Ron?" He said cheerily.

"No thanks, Harry. I am busy" she scoffed but immediately regret it as his face fell.

"Well, maybe I can help."

"No"

"Why?" he quipped.

Hermoine was speechless for once in her life. She refused to let anyone help with a simple charm. Without a thought, she grabbed the lock and threw it at the unsuspecting boy. It had hit him on the left leg, leaving a throbbing pain on his ankle.

"Bloody hell Hermoine!" He hissed while picking up the lock.

"Oh. I see."

"See what, Harry? See that this spell is absolutely rediculous? See that a mud blood can't perform a simple charm? I am NOT incompetent because I cannot open a lock!" she hissed.
