Till the day you died

She'd thought this was it; love. She was ready to leave everything behind for him, her brother and the security and familiarity that came with Klaus.

At first Stefan Salvatore was just intriguing, ruthless and impossibly impulsive – it was fun. They danced and they laughed together, but at some point something must have changed, because all of a sudden she could imagine an eternity like this, with him at her side. No more running, no more hiding, Mikael was just a fuzzy shadow in her mind that had lost his ability to frighten her.

Even the shock, the chaos of the night in the club with wooden bullets whizzing through the air, couldn't make the feeling go away. She felt strangely invincible and at the same time as if she was on the brink of death, like she needed to act now.

She wanted a different life than the one Nik could give her, was willing to take it, but instead of letting her have it he took it away altogether.

She barely remembers the dagger going into her heart, but even though she couldn't move she could feel it being removed, inch by inch. Life was slowly returning to her dry limbs and when she found the guard it was all instinct. Blood, life, love – Stefan.

She hated this new century at first, hated Nik for what he did to her, but she played along anyway. What other choice did she have, really? If she had left the two of them she would have been all alone in this strange age.

The phones and so called computers weren't the only things that are beyond the grasp of her understanding though, Stefan was just as different these days, the gleeful joy, the swagger with which he used to hunt and play with his food were gone. He acted distanced towards her, stiffly even.

She thought it was understandable, probably, she had missed out on roughly 90 years and not even vampires stay completely the same. It would take time, but he would be hers again.

Her dreams were shattered with a lie and a kiss that wasn't much more. She had died for him and he had just moved on.

Another doppelganger. Of course, what else had the ability to draw the men in her life, her brothers and now Stefan away from her? Make her an afterthought in their minds? Anger burned through her chest at the thought, the wish to hurt him like he had hurt her more prominent than anything else, but there were other things to do, places to go. Mystic Falls.

She didn't need him. Nik would kill the girl, drain her, finally make his precious hybrids and then they'd leave together. Always and forever didn't pertain to her relationship with Stefan Salvatore after all.
