A/N: This is my first attempt at fanfiction and, DAYS fanfic at that. I thought I go with an easy little snippet of an AU scene between Kate and Sami that was knocking around in my head as a oneshot - I just love the dynamic between these two characters. Hope you like it!

The sounds of the raised voices in argument were muffled and indistinct but still quite noticeable. Kate DiMera glanced up overhead at the ceiling, and briefly shook her head as she raised her drink to her lips. A small smirk flashed across her face as she listened to the volatile couple carry on. To be honest, in a rather large mausoleum like the DiMera mansion, one shouldn't be able to hear the goings-on from any other room on another floor - the place could be practically sound-proof. But trust the newlywed additions to the DiMera legacy to put that myth to rest, Kate mused.

What sounded like a door slamming and hurried stomping footsteps down the staircase soon snapped Kate out of her leisurely musings. Another brief amused smirk appeared as she heard someone storm into the living-room. Kate schooled her expression to one of disinterest as she turned to face the irate and brooding face on Samantha DiMera. Sprawled on one of the ornate and disgustingly obnoxious antique of a chair, Sami was unaware of her company briefly studying her in silence.

"So. Is the honeymoon over so soon for the lovely newlyweds? What is it this time, hmmm?" drawled Kate, snapping Sami out of her own little world. Sami's eyes' narrowed as she spotted Kate, her long-time nemesis and now step-mother-in-law.

"Kate." The name spat from Sami's mouth with enough vitriol to burn like acid. "What are you doing here?"

"I live here, Sami. Or was that empty little brain of yours unable to hold that much information?" was the quick sniping reply.

"Well, I always hoped you'd find another rock to crawl under and make your home while we were gone." came the biting comeback.

"Funny. Now, what did you do this time, Sami? Or was it EJ?" Kate mocked as she ignored the death-glares her step-son's wife was now shooting at her. She toyed with the drink in her hand and raised an eyebrow as she continued her taunting, "Did he finally wise-up to you and just who - or what, rather - he'll be waking up to every morning from now on? If that's the case, then it's a little too late for that revelation since you're already married, don't you think? But ... better late than never, right?"

"Oh, spare me, Kate." Sami said bitterly, "Why don't you find a coffin and bury yourself with it. I'm sure there's one somewhere around here in this mausoleum."
