Fiddling preoccupied with knobs and levers, blinking foolishly at the deck in front of him, Miles was suddenly aware of every button he was pushing self consciously.
'Err- if I just sample some of the err- track…' said Miles chewing his lip, and risking a glance up from the table.
Lucy wasn't even paying attention, as if she was dancing to some type of distant music exclusively for her ears only, she spun, jumped and flew in front of the mirror, long dark hair swishing round her face and falling over her skin tight leotard. He watched her in the mirror, until she caught his gaze and stopped suddenly.
'Sorry, you were saying something?'
'Nothing.' He said quickly looking back down at the deck, 'I've finished.'
She picked up a towel and patted her forehead, her eyes bright from the exercise as her breath was heavy.
'Let's hear it then.' She said approaching him.
Miles fumbled for the play button, hitting it harder than he had meant and felt he was lucky not to have jammed it altogether. Luckily the speakers started to shake with the volume of the new mix he had just threw together, heavy drum beat and staccato strings section, Lucy nodded her head appreciatively.
'Its good stuff, Miles.' She said eyes on the deck.
He muttered thanks, ejecting the tape and stowing it in his bag, 'I'll send it the mp3 to Nora.' He added.
Lucy, who had rapped her coat around her shoulders, stuffed her hands in her pocket.
'Yeah, Nora.' She said looking at her reflection in the mirror, 'for her senior piece'
Miles picked up his bag and swung it, watching her brush her hair down and from his position he couldn't be too sure if she was watching him or not.
She started to hum a quiet distant tune under her breath and Miles leant on the door frame just listening, her voice was so beautiful, so angelic, it made his knees feel as if they would give way at any moment.
Too dangerous.
'I'm going now.' He said quickly and turned to leave, bursting through the door and down the corridor, his head reeling and his cheeks burning. Why has she always had this effect on him?
He dashed down the front steps and leant on the wall by the school's name plaque, closing his eyes and sighing.
'Miles?' He jumped almost a foot in the air, and his eyes darted open.
'Do you want a lift home?' said Lucy quietly, her eyes studying him confused.
'No thanks.' He said, 'I can walk.'
Lucy watched him go, his head down and bag full of music swinging from his outstretched hand and her chest gave an involuntary thump. Obviously, He didn't feel the same way about her as she had about him for years…
