Author's Note: Both of the Winchester boys are alone, since their dad went hunting... well, something. And just so you don't get confused – yes, they are kids. How old exactly? Well, I'll just leave it to your imagination... Ah, and yes, it was supposed to be this short, just wanted to try one-page one-shot and I was really bored since I had a free period thanks to the HSAs... Yeah... Enjoy?
Declaimer: I. Own. Nothing.
It happened on an ordinary night...
His eyes shot open, nothing but terror mirroring in the pair of green orbs. The overwhelming darkness stretched across the room like a thick blanket, letting only a dim ray of silver moonlight, floating through messily shut curtains, take a small space on the floor. It scared the small boy, who was wrapped tightly in the covers and blankets, nothing but blackness swallowing him, devouring slowly.
For a moment or two he simply listened to his own pulse, thumping loudly in his ears, and the sound of light snoring, coming from the bed next to his.
"Dean?", the boy tried calling his brother, though he was certain that there would be no response.
And he was right.
Slowly, he propped himself on his elbows, scanning the room in order to convince himself that there was nothing to be scared of. With one of the blankets still pulled up to his chin, he felt a drop of sweat travel down the side of his face and then disappear after sinking into the blanket's soft material.
"Dean?", he tried again, his voice almost a whimper. A louder snore was his answer, as well as the sound of sheets rustling under the other boy's shifting body.
It was more than enough to make Sam Winchester jump out of his bed and nearly storm to his brother's side.
"Dean?", for the first time that night, Sam called his sibling in a hopeful voice.
"Mh?", the older of the two mumbled, not bothering to open his eyes.
"Dean... I had a nightmare", the boy sniffed, feeling his body shake from the cold air that came through the open window. He suddenly tensed, watching a white curtain dance in the song of whistling wind. He felt more and more scared with every second, yet had no idea what to do. Should he shake his brother until he was awake? Or maybe just go back to his own bed and try to forget about everything after burying himself under multiple layers of covers?
Suddenly, he yelped in surprise as he felt something grab his wrist. Looking down, his watery eyes met the half-lidded ones of his brother.
"Come 'ere, Sammy", Dean pulled his sibling closer to himself, lifting the cover up so that the smaller of the two could crawl next to him.
Sam obeyed, lying next to Dean chest-to-chest and burying his nose in the crook of the other's neck.
"Don't worry, Sammy", the older teen yawned, closing his eyes "I'll protect you from everything, even nightmares"
Sam gave a little nod and closed his eyes as well. He now could listen to Dean's pulse, while feeling the boy's breath on his cheek.
Dean didn't have to tell him that, he knew.
He just knew.
