Soul

Even the smallest of sounds were audible to him now.

The chirp of an insect, the rustle of his coat over the tall grass. The gentle flowing of the river, the gentle breeze stirring the crisp autumn leaves in the trees above. The crunch of the leaves beneath his feet, the flutter of a bird's wings.

He still couldn't believe it was true. No, he refused to believe it. It couldn't be possible…or could it be? He shook his head, tossing his light brown ponytail over his shoulder.

Four years spent traveling, to search for a myth he had only read about in legends.

A crazy quest to regain what had been taken.

He knew exactly what it was he had one wrong--revive their mother--what else could it be? He couldn't remember so much…so much forgotten. What the others told him wasn't enough. It wouldn't ever be enough. He longed to see one person the most. But, as everyone constantly told him, "He's gone, Alphonse, and isn't ever coming back."

He wouldn't believe these…these lies. There wasn't any other way to put it. He sincerely believed, deep in his heart, that his brother was alive—out there, somewhere. He tried voicing his thoughts once, but, they always said, "He's gone, Alphonse, and isn't ever coming back."

So he simply stopped telling them his thoughts. If his brother really is gone, wouldn't he have felt it by now? But just wishing and believing weren't enough anymore. If he couldn't trust the others around him, then how could he only rely on his desires?

He wouldn't depend on anyone else anymore. He would only need himself to do what he was planning to. After he had finished training again, he had thought his path would be clear then. He really had no idea what to do, or how he was going to do it.

So he would travel. Travel and search, practice his alchemy, and find out anything he could about the Gate and the hidden knowledge about possibly forbidden alchemy. He was willing to do anything, anything to regain what he lost.

After thinking this, something clicked in his brain, but because of the missing memories, he didn't know what it was, but it had something to do with his brother, and their famed quest for the Stone. The said quest had brought them even closer together than before, even now, when Alphonse couldn't remember and they were still so far apart.

My soul may have been the only thing that has seen this things, brother, he thought, but my soul still says your alive. So I will find you brother, I promise. Wherever you are, I will bring you back.

And for the rest of the day, the younger Elric stood in the peace of his hometown, and the peace of his own mind and soul, thinking about memories that were so regrettably lost. Hopefully, not forever lost…
