Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto

The Uchiha house has, for a very long time, been a void, dark and lifeless place. Before then, there wasn't a time when the house was lifeless; the rustle of papers from his father's office, the smell of his mother cooking his favorite foods, or the soft steps of his brother with Sasuke following close behind. Then it became a very quiet, eerie place, as if the people who lived there never existed except for him.

There came a time, while living in that newly emptied house, hearing nothing but his own footsteps echo through the halls, that Sasuke could no longer bear being in that huge land, leaving the suffocating house immediately as the memories suddenly became like a weight on his heart.

His new home―no, his new residence―was significantly smaller. The kitchen just a door beyond his own bed rather than down the stairs, his bathroom just a step away. It was smaller, a little cramp and still empty.

Coming back to the village he grew up after so many years, he found his old residence had been destroyed, rebuilt and given to someone else. But he was given another new place; bigger, more roomy. The kitchen was back downstairs; the bathroom right across the hall, and his bed room had a wide window that showed the Hokage Mountains. He could watch construction workers carve his teacher's face into the rocks that overlooked the entire village.

"You should decorate this place," Sakura said one day.

It had crossed his mind a few times. He just, well, wasn't much of a decorator.

Naruto, Sakura, Sai, and sometimes Kakashi would come by everyday with supplies, furniture pieces, tools, even wallpaper ("You really need to lighten this place up," said Naruto, holding one square of wallpaper against the wall before switching to another one). They lifted furniture into his new house (actually more of Sakura and Sai. Sasuke and Naruto had difficulties lifting them with their only arm).

Gradually, the walls gained a few warm colors, a small table was assembled by the couch with a small lamp on top, bookshelves, various kinds of magnets decorated his fridge, pictures stood on his dresser and bedside table, a T.V., and because he was an Uchiha, the familiar red and white fan hung in an empty wall space in the living room.

"So, how do you like it?" asked Sakura, her legs folded underneath her and her head tucked in the crook of his neck.

Sasuke put his one good arm around her shoulder and was silent for a long moment. "It's adequate."

"'Adequate'? We decorate your new place for months and all you can say is that it's adequate?"

Sasuke rolled his eyes. "It's homey."

Sakura shook her head and buried her face in his shirt. "You're impossible."

That may be true, but for Sasuke, that was the best word to describe it. This house, this little house, so miniscule compared to the home he grew up in, was inviting, comforting, warm, and cozy. Even after years have passed, when a little girl with the color of his hair and the shape of her eyes runs through the place, her feet padding along the floors, with her chatter filling the halls, the moment he walks through those large gates and Naruto says he's good to go, he heads straight there. To see that same little girl, who has gotten taller since the last time he saw her, and to see Sakura waiting for him in this little house he called home.
