Niella shivered in the cold night air. She was worried. The gates to the Underworld had risen and were just waiting to be opened. One mistake in her mission tonight and she had caused the end of the world. She couldn't deal with that kind of guilt.
"Worried, are we?" A voice behind her said.
Niella turned abruptly and let out a sigh of relief.
"Oh, you scared me, Jonathan." She smiled. "I thought you were Morticon or another one of his goons."
"Nah," Jonathan smirked, "His goons aren't half as good looking as me. Now you didn't answer my question."
"How could I not be? The fate of the world's in my hands. If I make one little mistake, it's all over."
"Ella, you're not as alone as you make it seem. I'm here to help you, remember?" Ella shrugged hopelessly. "That's not all that's worrying you, is it?" He paused. "Ella, they're in safe hands, don't worry."
"I don't know Jonathan." She sighed, "I trust Udonna with my life and there's never been a nobler man than your brother, but… I've had visions lately. Nick and Clare are all grown up in them and we're not there. Nick is always alone, drifting from place to place and never feeling like he's wanted. Oh, and then there's Clare, she's fighting as a gatekeeper and, Jonathan, she's about to die to an awful warrior."
"Ella, don't worry yourself; you've had false visions before. Maybe they're just dreams of what could happen if we lose this battle." He paused for a second, "Ella, if you give up, you'll just be making sure that happens. You and me … we can't allow that… for their sakes."
"I'm sorry, Jon, you're right. We can't give this battle up now."
There was a dull silence as they walked on the road to the gates until they came to a split in the road.
"Jon, we've got to split up." Niella whispered. "It's the only way. One of us has to hold the enemy back."
"Are you kidding, Ella! Splitting up only leads to death! Probably for both of us!"
"Jonathan, listen." Niella said seriously, "I know you and the other rangers just think of me as a ditz, but you've got to listen to me. If we both go down the same path and it's the wrong one, then the enemy can break free and no one will stop him. It's the only way to protect the children! Think of our children."
Jonathan and Niella debated for a few minutes before Jonathan finally let in to his wife's wishes and they both went their separate ways.
Niella usually hated walking alone. She always preferred being surrounded by friends, whether she was making a total fool of herself or not, but today was different, she needed time to think. Last night the vision haunted her. What if it really was real?
If it was real, what would become of their children? Clare would grow up with Udonna, learning to become a gatekeeper and one day find herself near the edge of death. Nick would live with his uncle until his death and then be passed around to family members as much as a hot potato. No, they deserved more than that. They deserved a family.
By this time, Niella could see the gate and a man limping around inside of it. She could see that the man morphed in a red suit. It was Jonathan.
For a few idol minutes of shock all she did was stare at him as he tried to escape the hole he had found himself trapped in.
"Niella!" Jonathan yelled from the gates, "Close the gates! It's the only way!"
And she did as she fell to the ground, sobbing.
It was all her fault.
The vision would come true for sure now.
The world had survived, but she had still lost.
She didn't want to live anymore.
A/N: Yeah, I know. It was kind of a sad ending the chapter. After I watched Gatekeeper part I, I thought of this and I couldn't get it out of my head until I wrote it down. Please, tell me what you think.
