Wheatley, who had been working as Caroline's assistant, had stopped by her office to drop off his reports from the most recent test. Today was Caroline's birthday, he knew that. They just never celebrated anything like that at Aperture. He knocked on the door to her office. "Miss Caroline, may I come in?" He asked. He heard a "yeah" come from inside the room, slightly muffled by what sounded like tears. Wheatley opened the door to the office to see Caroline hunched over in her chair, crying. "Miss Caroline, are you okay?" He asked a dumb question. Before he could take it back, he was met with a sharp "What do you think?" From her. "Is this about mr. Johnson?" He asked. If she was crying, there was a 99.9% chance it was about or was related to his death. She gave a shakey nod. "Do you want to talk about it?" He asked. "No, I'm... I'm fine." She replied, words choked with tears. "Are you sure?" He asked one final question. "No..." Her words now fully covered with tears. "I do... I do want to talk about it." Wheatley dropped the papers on the desk and sat in the chair across from it as Caroline put her head on the desk and sobbed. It was slightly hard to hear her through the tears, but he could make out, "Every year on my birthday Cave used to bake me a cake. A full, four layer, Black Forest cake! My favourite kind. And not only that, sometimes he would let me take a day off from work if he thought I was stressed. I thought he cared about me, but now that I am hearing about his last recorded message he made, apparently he wanted my mind to be forced into some crazy supercomputer! What idiot would be stupid enough to give up all humanity and to become some insane self aware robot and never see the sun again!?" Wheatley could see where she was coming from. Honestly, who would want to do such a thing? Caroline sighed. "I'm sorry for ranting on about this to you. I suppose we should get back to work." Wheatley stood up. "Um, yeah, I suppose we should." He replied. He walked out of her office, and instead of heading back to his own office, he headed straight to the kitchen.

Wheatley entered Caroline's office to see her chewing on a pen and staring down at a paper. She had stopped crying, but her cheeks were damp as if she was just crying before. Wheatley set down the cake on her desk. Caroline looked up surprised. She examined the whole thing. Four layers, eight cherrys on the top and one single white candle in the middle. She was speachless. "Happy birthday miss Caroline." Wheatley smiled. She got up, tears swelling in her eyes, and hugged him. She couldn't say anything. She was just so happy. "I promise I would never hurt you. I care about you. I do." He whispered to her. She only hugged him tighter. "Thank you, thank you so much." She whispered back to him. "I love you, you know?" Wheatley whispered. Caroline giggled softly. "I know. And I love you too." And they were left there in the middle of the room, hugging, knowing there was an amazing future awaiting them.
