A/n: okay, new story! Feel honored, 'cause I'm exhausted. LOL. By the way, this story will have a fuck ton of Percy Jackson, Magnus Chase, and Kane Chronicles refferences. Enjoy!
Disclaimer: I'm not V Roth. I'm Bianca M.
Prologue:
I'm sitting in the rheumotologist's office, my fingers kind of twisting together, but not the way they used to. Mainly because two of them are huge and swollen. Natalie sits on my left, Andrew sits on my right, and we wait. Natalie and Andrew are my godparents. My own parents died soon after I was born, and I don't remember them.
"Beatrice Prior?" We get up from the waiting room chair, and follow the nurse into the back. She immediately starts by introducing herself, and asking questions.
"Hi. I'm Melanie. How old are you, Beatrice?"
"Ten." I answer, examining my wrist, which is also swollen.
"What seem to be the trouble, Mrs. Prior?" Melanie asks.
"Mrs. Wright, actually." Natalie says, readjusting in her seat. "Tris's finger started swelling up a couple months ago. And she woke up with hip and knee pain, she couldn't bend her elbow very much, and she has a swollen wrist."
"Okay. Beatrice, can you hold your hand out for me?" She draws some blood, and leaves.
Waiting is agony, especially when you're ten, and the news you can get will change your life forever.
TWO WEEKS LATER:
My twin, Caleb, hugs me right before I leave for my appoinment. This time, Melanie calls me back almost right away, and then immediately leaves the room. I study my fingers, bending the non-swollen ones, attempting, (and ultimately failing), to bend the swollen ones.
Melanie finally re-enters the room, followed by Doctor Langford. She takes my hand, examines my fingeds, nods at Melanie, and gestures for her to leave. Then, he turns to us, and says the five words that change my life forever.
"Beatrice has juvinile, suriatic artharitis."
"What does that mean?" Natalie asks. She grabbs my hand, and squeezes it hard.
"It means that her joints are swollen because there's a build-up of fluid in her joinss. We going to try Naproxen to bring down the swelling, and to stop mobility damage."
"Will I still be able to play soccer?" I ask, hoping for a posative answer. I don't get it.
"No. I'm sorry. There's too much risk of tearing permanent injury, or further joint damage."
I start to cry. Tears stream down my face, and I wipe them away with my sleeve. I want to wake up from this nightmare.
Natalie, Andrew, and I leave the doctor's, and Natalie puts her arms around me, holding meclose. "We'll figure it out, honey."
I try to believe her, I really do. I sit in the backseat, while Andffew drives, wiping away all the tears.
Caleb is waiting on the porch, his messy brown hair talzbbsh. As soon as Andrew parks, I run to my twin, and we hug each other tightly. I know he can read my facial expression, and can tell that I have it, juvinile artharitis.
Caleb and I spend the day wrapped in blankets, watching movies, and eating ice cream out of the tub. Natalie and Andrew leave to get my prescription, and then they force me to take it, along with a probiotic.
I don't sleep well that night. My tears stain the pillow. How can I live without playing soccer? How will I tell my team?
Andra is waiting for me at the bus. When she sees me walking over, she waves excitedly. You can see the light dancing in her sparkling brown eyes.
"Hey! You excited about the game tonight?"
"I can't go." I say bleakly, climbing the steps to the bus. My knees hurt. A lot.
"Why can't you?" Andra demands. "You said you'd be there!"
"I just can't. My doctor told me not to." I say, sliding into the seat in the very back.
"Wow. Some teammate you are." Andra says, storming off to the front.
I can feel everyone's eyes on me all day. I sulk through classes, and finally, I text Natalie to pick me up. I got my phone in third grade, and it's been a life-saver. I didn't even make it to third period.
"Hi, Beatrice." Natalie says. She never calls me Beatrice, unless I'm sick or hurt.
"Hi, Natalie." I say, curling up in the passenger seat as much as I can without feeling huge amounts of pain.
"Rough day?" Natalie asks. I nod.
"Wanna talk about it?" I shake my head.
"Want me to get your brother?" I nod.
"Okay, let's go get Caleb."
Sometimes, I hate that we go to diccerent schools. Caleb goes to Victor Blake Academy, and I go to Chicago Elementary.
Caleb climbs into the backseat next to me. I moved back there awhile back, because I kept feeling like everyone was staring at me.
"Hey, B." Caleb says.
"Hi, C." I whisper back.
When we get home, Caleb and I go to my room. I sit in bed, Caleb sits at my desk, and we turn on the TV. Natalie brings in the ice cream, and we dig in.
The next day is Saturday. I don't have to try again for two days, so Caleb and I bake cookies, play cards, and somehow rope Andrew and Natalie into a marathon game of Monopoly. Then, we all sit in the family room, reading.
The rest of the year is torture. I didn't have a single friend after I was forced to quit soccer. Eventually, Natalie and Andrew decide to look into other options.
We go to several private schools, before we finally decide to try Faction Academy. It's a huge school, with several buildings, that are all different colors. There are three buildings that are multicolored, and several storeys tall. And, there's a small, squat building settled on the edge of the property, with neutral colors, with a sign that reads OFFICE.
The four of us enter to find a pretty young woman behind the desk. She's pretty in an understated way, with long brown hair, and sparkling brown eyes. She gets up when we step up to the counter.
"Hi. I'm Tessa, the school secretary. Are you here to join our faction high family?"
"Um, ye. Yes, we are."
"Great. So, what are your names?" Tessa smiles, putting us at ease.
"I'm Andrew Wright," Andrew says, extending his hand for Tessa to shake. Tessa just bobbs her head in a Japaneese greeting style.
"I'm Natalie Wright," Natalie continues, smiling and head-bobbing to Tessa. Tessa head-nods back.
"I'm Caleb Prior." shaleb smiles at me before nodding to Tessa.
"Tris Prior." I say, following my family's lead.
"Welcome. I'm gonna have you take this quiz for us." Tessa slides two sheets of paper across the counter.
Caleb finishes his first, but I'm right behind him. Tessa goes over his information, and gives him a thick blue envelope. Then, she goes over mine, and furrows her eyebrow. She stands, and leans on the counter.
"Tris, your results were inccclusive. You have three options: Abnegation, Dauntless, and Erudite." As she states my three choices, she puts a different color envelope on the counter: one gray, one black, and one blue. "Abnegation are the selfless, Dauntless the brave, and Erudite the intelligent. You, Tris, are what's known as Divergent. We need you to make your faction choie now."
I look at Caleb. He mouthes "Follow your heart. We'll always be close." I nod, and reach for my envelope.
A/n: okay, so I don't know a lot about artharitis, so I'm doing the best I can. I hope you enjoy. Please let me know if I screwed anything up. As for the Andrew and Natalie Wright thing, I didn't want to change Tris's last name, but Andrew and Natalie are her godparents in this story. Anyway, adios amigos!
Bianca.
