Gray eyes watch her protectively and trace that pulsing life across the room, watching the other shadows to, to be sure that she is not trailed or followed out into the cool night air. She is capable of taking care of herself but he still watches, as though she might slip out of reality and into memory at any time.
There was another once, who did just that. He failed her, wasn't there, and she vanished out of reality and time, her soul stamped on the walls just a memory. And memory is all he will ever have of this one.
But she, she he watches now, will be different.
She is small and strong, but will not be exposed to danger.
Her pulsing life is a strong current, a stronger hum than the predecessor's. Because while the last was simply ephemeral, this one has permanence and roots thrown deep down in the earth. She's here to stay.
And he won't let anything bring her to harm or cast darkness on her small frame.
Because he derives his light from her.
