The rebellion has failed. Millions are dead and District 13 is gone.
I, Crystal Lewis, am one of only twenty survivors of the Capitol's nuclear attacks on District 13, and if you're reading this, I can only hope that the remaining 12 districts have finally gained the courage to stand up to the cruel capital and its many abuses.
This is how my new life begins:
Day 1: Almost all houses and buildings have been wiped out by the nuclear bombs, there's not a plant or tree in sight, and the only animals that remain are cockroaches that are all over the few ruins, including the justice building, which is where my little sister, Violet, and I are taking refuge for the moment. Some of the surviving adults are outside, wearing special suits and gas masks as a result of the many toxins in the air, which would kill anyone that breathes through it in one second.
"Crystal? Is it all over yet?" asks Violet, who has just woken up from the first long sleep she's had since the deaths of our parents a week ago.
"No. Sometimes I think it's never going to end," I answer solemnly.
Violet's only eleven years old (I'm sixteen), but she's been through so much that her childhood has been completely destroyed. I'm the only family she has left, and I'm determined to protect her no matter what, because right now, I see her as the only reason for staying alive.
For some reason, the television is working completely well. All we can see is the celebrations of victory going on in the Capital: the parades, the endless partying, those stupid residents of the Capitol, dressed in their ridiculous outfits and hairstyles. They're all laughing and screaming out of happiness, as if they hadn't just killed over millions of people. As if there aren't survivors all over Panem who were homeless and starving. As if everything is normal.
I don't know what the future has in store for me, or Violet, or the survivors of District 13, or the remaining 12 districts of Panem. The Capital could be planning anything at this moment. But I know one thing for sure: as long as there's hope, we just might have a better future.
