The Man Who Never Smiled

The color was fading from the sky and it was getting late. His office was on the 42nd floor, it was 8:59 when he left for home. When the elevator reached the lobby, the doors opened and he gently stepped out. By this time, everyone had gone home to their families for the long weekend ahead. Due to holidays and scheduling everyone got a nice four day weekend. The main lobby was empty except for the security which held the front desk. He waved and they waved back, he then left the building.

He stepped out through the revolving door and took a sharp left. This path took him to the parking garage. By now the sky had faded to a bright orange with a red glow, the streetlights had come on, and it had started to drizzle. When he came to his car he unlocked it and stepped in. As he left the parking garage he waved to the parking attendant, he waved back. It was 9:14 and he was late for diner with his fiancé.

When he pulled up to the restaurant he stepped out of his car, the vale took it. He gently pulled open the door, he was tired and his energy had left him. Usually after a days work he went home and rested, but tonight was different. As he approached the stewardess he heard the nearby tables and hoped that she had gotten something quite in the back.

"Hello, party of one tonight?"

He waited and replied "Um no, actually I believe my fiancé is already here"

"Ah yes, your Mr.…" and she trailed off, the restaurant had become loud again and he couldn't hear her anymore, so he just nodded politely. He hoped it was a quiet spot somewhere deep in the restaurant. He sure didn't want to be screaming at his future in-laws.

"Here you are sir, may I get you something to drink"

As he sat down he noticed that the trio was laughing and smiling, they had already ordered their drinks. "Yes, I'll have a scotch." He felt tired and figured the best way to get through this was numb.

"Yes sir right away" The stewardess, was gone.

He was now alone with only his Fiancé and his future in-laws.

The day had truly ended, and the night had finally begun.

The long weekend went by quickly. It was fast and the return was abrupt. The weekend mostly consisted of him and her, discussing their wedding plans. But it was a good long break and he was ready to get back and get some work in before the wedding.

When he came into the lobby, everyone was quickly hustling about. He waved to the security and they waved back. When he got to his floor his secretary was waiting with a stack of forms to be signed. These finalized the deal with a recent company his company now owned.
