Chapter 1 fish out of water
Emma POV
This summer has been amazing and horrible at the same time. It's been wonderful traveling with my family and we still have one more place to visit before we head home to Australia, but I've missed my best friends terribly. Cleo and Rikki were like my sisters, the three of us shared a secret a secret that bonded us together. We're mermaids, I know it was a shocker to us too. Just under three years ago Cleo Rikki and myself found ourselves stranded on an island off the coast of where we lived. When I couldn't get a signal on my mobile we went in search of higher ground. When Cleo accidentally slipped and fell into a strange cavern we stupidly decided to follow her. When we couldn't get out the way we came in we decided to try and find another way. As a result we discovered what we came to call the moon pool. A secret cave hidden in the shell of a long dormant volcano. That night also happened to be the night of the full moon that changed our lives. The next day we came to find that whenever we touched water we grew tails orange scaly tales. We had become mermaids and not only did we turn into mermaids we also gained these amazing powers. I could freeze things, Cleo could manipulate water, and Rikki could heat it up. Later on we discovered we could control the weather make storms and Rikki could make fire and lightning. While Cleo could control wind and I could make it snow. Over time we learnt control and faced a few problems. Well first there was this Dr, who wanted to turn us into her science experiment, and then there was this really awful girl called Charlotte she tried to take way our powers and steal Lewis Cleo's best friend and ours too away from us. Eventually we stopped her and it seemed things would be great. We fell in love I with this amazing guy called Ash, Rikki with a guy called Zane, and Cleo with Lewis. Everything was perfect, until my parents decided to go on extended holiday and force my brother and I to go with them. To say it was difficult keeping my secret from them would be an understatement. There were to many close calls to count. Luckily I had gotten pretty good at keeping my tail a secret. Which was were things were at now, my mom and dad were in the front seat of our rental car and Eliot and I were in the back. I was texting Ash we kept in constant contact I missed him like crazy. We'd landed in port angelus a small shopping town a little over an hour ago and were heading to the small town of forks, Washington. Where my moms brother in law lived with my cousin Bella. My aunt Renee was no longer with Charlie they'd divorced a long time ago but we were all still on good terms. We had already visited Renee and her new husband Phil but we hadn't expected my cousin Bella to not be there. When Renée told us that Bella had gone to live with uncle Charlie I insisted we go visit them. Especially when Renee told us about what Bella was going through. She told us that Bella had been through a bad breakup and was extremely depressed. I thought that it might do Bella good to see some familiar faces. So that's about everything, we pulled up to Bella and Charlie's house about an hour later. I was worried about the fact that it was almost always raining in this dreary little town. If I got wet well you know what would happen. I small smile played at the corners of my mouth as I used my power to make it stop raining. Smiling I was the last to climb out of the car. I smiled wider when I saw Uncle Charlie come out of the house he still looked the same as he did the last time I'd seen him when I was thirteen. Same short but disheveled brown hair and warm brown eyes.
"uncle Charlie" I called as he pulled me into a hug.
"it's good to see you kid you've grown up nicely." I groaned softly a small smile gracing my lips.
"awe uncle Charlie" he grinned at me. Before releasing me so that he could embrace my mom.
"Lisa how have you been" he asked as he released her.
"I've been lovely Charlie" she said with a smile. As Charlie shook my dad's hand and pulled him too in for a hug.
"how about you Neil life been treating you well." Dad laughed.
"of course Charlie life's been great." Eliot ran up to us then.
"hey uncle Charlie." Charlie swept him up in a hug and spun him around.
"you're getting huge kid wont be able to do this much longer." he laughed as he set Eliot back on his feet.
"well how about we head inside this isn't Australia you'll catch a cold out here." he smiled and turned to go inside.
"err Charlie were is Bella." I asked trying to be innocent. As he led us into the house. I watched as he tried to hide his very audible sigh.
" she's at work should be home shortly." I nodded and feigned a smile.
"that's great I can't wait to see her."
Bella POV
Six months and twelve days that's how long It'd been since He had left me. Since he tore out my heart and told me that He didn't love me. Since they all left me. The fact that they were vampires didn't even matter to me, but that's what he blamed it on. I suppose I'd known all along that I was never good enough that he couldn't love someone as insignificant as me. I mean I was a boring fragile human, how could I compare to that of a vampires flawless beauty. I shook my head trying to rid myself of the thoughts that would cause the hole in my chest to widen and the pain I tried so hard to burry to come bubbling to the surface. He told me it would be as if he never existed, he lied to me. How could I forget him the mere thought sent waves of pain through out my entire body.
I sighed this had been the tenor of my thoughts for some time now at least when I was awake or maybe those aren't the right words. When the pain became to much I went into this kind of numb state. Were I was completely on autopilot I didn't think I just acted. I know that it scared my father Charlie and for him I seriously tried to live my life normally, but even I knew I wasn't really fooling him. Almost every night for the last six months since they left me, I'd woken up screaming from nightmares. I was sure I now resembled something rather close to a zombie. The lack of sleep and sunlight could do that to a person. I let loose another sigh, I was almost home now, my beat up old Chevy roared in my ears. You could here this truck coming from a mile away. I knew Charlie would be home from work when I got there I had taken an extra shift at the store and it had run late. I wondered if Charlie would have waited for me to get home to make dinner or if he had just gone a head and ordered pizza. I hopped it was the ladder cooking dinner for Charlie was the only thing that made me feel remotely human, it was such a mundane task. That it hardly required any energy but cooking made me feel alive like I was still me. Even if any other time of the day I felt like an empty shell. A ghost of the girl I'd been before I'd met them. Before I came to love them.
I was jolted out of my thoughts when I almost hit the silver car parked in our drive. I hit the brakes just in time and managed to park with out damaging the vehicle parked were I normally did. I shook my head as I climbed out of my truck, wondering fleetingly who cold be visiting us.
The rain drenched my hair as I slowly made my way to my front door. The door was open Charlie was expecting me and hadn't locked it. I pushed open the door and stepped inside, shaking out my hair as I went.
"Dad" I called out. "I m home" my voice sounded dull even to my ears.
"in the living room Bella" he hollered and I could her a faint murmuring of voices , our visitors. I hung my coat and bag on the hook and slipped my wet boots off, before heading into the living room.
Emma POV
Bella looked terribly I hated to think it but she did. She didn't smile when she saw us sitting in her tiny living room. Charlie looked sad he tried to hide it but it was clear in his eyes how much Bella's current state saddened him.
"Bells you remember your Aunt Lisa and Uncle Neil and your cousins Emma and Elliot?" he asked her. She tried to smile and she nodded her head.
"yeah of course. Hey its great to see all of you again." she tried to put enthusiasm into her words but it fell flat it was fake and she knew it.
" I hope you guys are hungry I was thinking of making stir fry for dinner." she said and this time she seemed normal her enthusiasm was real when she talked about cooking. I smiled widely at her and since no one else seemed to know what to say so I did.
"that sounds good Bella what kind of stir fry." she smiled.
"Charlie fishes a lot so I was thinking fish." she stated sarcastically and I laughed.
"fish would be great would you like some help?" she nodded her smile had long since disappeared.
"yeah I would like that." her voice went back to being lifeless but it was a start. She turned and walked into the kitchen. I shook my head at my parents and Charlie before following.
"so Bella how are things?" I asked as I entered the kitchen. She was pulling ingredients from the fridge when I spoke. She didn't look at me as she answered.
"I m ok schools good my friend Jacob hates me but other than that I m good." I stared at her as she placed the ingredients for our dinner on the counter.
Her response bugged me. It was so painfully obvious that she wasn't fine. I had no clue who Jacob was and Charlie had already told us about her boyfriend and his family leaving. So I decided to be the supportive cousin.
"who is Jacob and why does he hate you. All though I m sure he doesn't hate you." she looked at me her expression odd.
"I consider him my best friend he's helped me a lot with well…" she seemed to be at a los for words so I supplied them for her.
" with your broken heart. I get it he left and you miss him But Bella what your doing isn't healthy I hate to say it but you look like crap." oh god what's wrong with me why did I say that. I m an idiot. I smacked my self in the forehead.
" oh god Bella I..": she cut me off I could see that she wanted to cry but she wasn't going to let her self.
"no your right your completely right it's just he left me with this gaping hole in my chest and I…" she trailed off as the tears spilled over.
"and I can't take it Em." I crossed the tiny kitchen quickly and wrapped her in a hug.
"Bella I have an idea." she sniffed and looked at me.
"I think you should come back with us." she stared at me.
"come back?" she asked.
"yeah come to Australia with us." she stared.
"what."
A/N So what do you think should I write more review and let me know.
