Torn from his internal musings as to what the Pandorica could possibly contain, the Doctor ran outside at the sound of whizzing … things overhead. Idly, he noticed Rory in the group of soldiers milling about.
Romans, he thought disparagingly, though this was mainly directed at Rory himself.
"Hello, Stonehenge," he said, speaking into the amplifier aimed at the heavens – and his enemies, hovering overhead in their spaceships. "Who takes the Pandorica takes the universe! But, bad news, everyone—" With this, he jumped into sight, on top of a rock. " 'Cause guess who? Ha!"
Observing the congregation up above, he fought back his growing panic as he said jovially, "You're all whizzing about. It's really very distracting. Could you all just stay still a minute? Because I. Am. Talking!"
"Now," he went on in the ensuing silence. "The question of the hour is 'Who's got the Pandorica'? Answer: I do. Next question: who's coming to take it from me?" He spread his arms wide, as though welcoming an attack.
Maybe I am, he thought. Maybe I actually want to die. Now that Rory's come back, what do I have to live for, anyway? What's the point of me, as Amy once so aptly put it? I love her; she loves him … so much for our happy ending.
"Come on," he said, egging them on. "Look at me: no plan, no back up, no weapons worth a damn. Oh, and something else – I don't have anything. to. lose."
I really don't, he thought morosely. Amy means everything to me, but I lost her the moment I left her behind the first time … I'm always just too little, too late.
"So, if you're sitting up there in your silly little spaceships with all your silly little guns, and you've got any plans on taking the Pandorica tonight, just remember who's standing in your way. Remember every black day I ever stopped you, and then – and then! – do the smart thing: let somebody else try first."
Again, he spread his arms wide, almost hoping that someone might take a parting shot – put him out of his misery, so to speak – before turning in a circle as he watched everyone fly away. Rolling his shoulders, he tossed Rory the amplifier thingy and jumped down. "That'll keep 'em squabbling for half an hour," he said confidently.
Looking around, he muttered, "Romans …" before walking away, back to Amy, to spend what time was left with his love.
