A/N: I DO NOT OWN THE VAMPIRE DIARIES.

"I love you, Stefan." Elena breathed and with all the hope she had, she silently begged her eyes didn't give away the truth. She did love Stefan but more than that, she loved his brother, Damon.

Behind Stefan, Damon was turning away as he rolled his eyes, "Go home Elena." Damon's voice was plain but his annoyance washed over Elena in tidal waves.

Stefan grabbed Damon by the shoulder and spun him around, "You're not as good of an actor as you think you are, Damon, because I know you feel for her." Stefan exclaimed with more hurt than Elena could bare.

"Stefan, please," Elena just barely mustered the words, "don't."

"Don't what, Elena?" Stefan's voice was rising angrily. "Don't say what you two don't have the guts to admit?" Stefan's eyes seemed to flare up in flames. "Well no, I'm not going to stand back anymore while the past repeats itself." Stefan shot a pointed look at Damon. "Have you forgotten who got the girl last time?" Every muscle in Damon's body tensed for a fight.

"Damon." Elena took a small step forward.

"Elena, go home, now." Damon ordered, the authority from his military experience seeping into his voice. Elena stood motionless, wanting to move but unable to. "Don't make me throw you over my shoulder and carry you out myself." Damon growled impatiently. Elena nodded slowly and inched her way towards the door. As soon as Elena's hand reached the doorknob, Damon erupted in anger. "Are you blind, Stefan?" He shouted. "Do you understand nothing?" When Stefan didn't respond, Damon grabbed him roughly by the hair and yanked his head down. "You need to learn who's stronger and in control here." Damon whispered menacingly.

Stefan shoved Damon away. "Why does Elena even matter to you?" The pain Stefan felt was evident in the way his eyes glistened with oncoming tears of frustration and heartache. "Up until now you were obsessed with Katherine." Stefan shook his head in confusion. "I don't get it."

"You do get it." Damon's face was rigid. "You just don't get me." Stefan's dewy, hurt filled eyes met Damon's blank ones. A mutual distaste for each other traveled through their stare. Only three things connected them; one being that they were brothers, two being their past relationship with Katherine, and three was that they were both in love with the same girl, Elena Gilbert. Stefan turned away before he could become even more distressed. Damon didn't bother calling after Stefan or even watching as he walked away, because he knew that he had won this battle. Winning the war would be an entirely different story though; one that he knew all too well.
