Sighting From Hell

It had been four years since the Lincoln, Michael, and Sara saga began. The ordeal with the government was over and it soon became a distant memory. A nightmare or a gruesome tale that should'nt be relived again. EVER. They tried with all their might to resume regular routines. But something had changed. For the worse, perhaps. Only time would tell.

"You know I care about you, Sara. About us. There is no one I'd rather be with.."

"Then you won't leave right?"

Sara leaned slightly forward towards Michael waiting for his reply. She was all to familiar with his constant absence[s. She wanted him, she needed him. Like water, she was in dire thrist for him. She could care less if she was the clingy type. All she wanted to know was that he was safe. Safe with her.

Sighing Michael rubbed his forehead. Sara's question was very direct. Too direct for a person who liked to give answerless answers.

He had met Sara early in the morning in Saint Peters Memorial Hospital to discuss their plans for the future. Toghether or Apart. After Lincoln, Michael, and Sara were pardoned by the government, Sara had moved back to Chicago once again becoming a practicing doctor at Saint Peters. Michael and Linc soon took up residence Chicago as well as reuniting with LJ in the process.

"It's not that simple Michael continued. My engineering firm has waited years for a project like this.."

"You don't care about our future then. Is it over? Are we over?"

"There has never been one doubt in my mind about you and me Sara. Never."

Michael was faced with a difficult decision. Cash was in rare form these days for Scofield. Either he traveled abroad to start building a multi-million dollar complex or stay in Chicago with the people he loved the most and risk being bankrupt.

Sara bit her bottom lip. The last thing she wanted to be was Michael's demise.

It's happening all over again thought Sara. He sacrificed himself for me and landed

in SONA. Now Michael would have to make another sacrifice.

She had forgotten the times when she sacrified herself when she left the infirmary door unlocked so Michael could escape with the others putting her job in jeporady and time when instead of leading the cops and the feds to Mike and Linc, she surrendered herself to the authorities.

This same thought ran through Michael's mind. He looked at Sara and smiled.

"I think we're even, Sara."

"How so?"

He reached over in one strong liquid movement and held her hand.

"You gave up a lot for me, Sara and don't go on denying it."

"Why would I?"

They both laughed, then sobered.

"Life is about sacrifices and making do with what you have. I need the money but I need you even more Sara, so I'm staying here in Chicago. Do not attempt to change my mind, Sara."

"Sara?"

Michael called her name repeatedly. Sara never answered.

Following her icy gaze out the breakroom window, Michael saw a face that brought so much dread along with it that it kept the couple stayed mouth agape in a frozen-like stance for several moments.
