-The Ache of Pyreflies-

The sun had set below the horizon, taking with it the light of day. No clouds hung in the evening sky, reflecting the emotions of the peoples of Spira. Sin was gone, the Eternal Calm left in its wake.

However, he was gone, as well.

The Moonflow was normally quiet at night as the fiends prowled, but for now, at least, no fiends had resurfaced since the defeat of Yu Yevon. The banks of the Moonflow were crowded with spectators as the pyreflies danced among the lily pads and water blossoms that bloomed in the warm, night air.

Most people would have enjoyed the company of the people they had saved, but tonight, the High Summoner wished nothing more than to be on the shore with only her remaining Guardians. The air was heavy as her Guardians stood around her, observing solemnly as she sat on the shore.

The High Summoner touched the surface of the water, ripples moving outwards from the point of contact. Her eyes watched the pyreflies dance along the water's edge as her minds began to wander. She wondered if the pyreflies were happy as they drifted to and fro among the aquatic plants.

Her eyes slipped closed as a memory resurfaced.

His laugh was almost intoxicating, giving her the courage to laugh along side him over the city of Luca. The warmth she felt with him had been genuine, even though she had forced herself to smile.

It hurt to smile, even now. Even now that Sin and Yu Yevon were no more. Even now when people could sleep in their beds without being afraid. Even now while the peoples of Spira celebrated in the streets...

Her heart ached.
