Today was Kakyoin's anniversary.
Jotaro had taken the day off work for the occasion and now sat in his car, he drove to where they met every time Kakyoin's anniversary rolled around - it was always the same place.
It was only him in the car, sometimes Polnareff would join but he wasn't able to make it this time around, only the roar of the engine and the typical noises that came with driving filled the air. Jotaro hated the drive to and from there because of how expensive it was. He swore Kakyoin purposely chose a spot that made him almost empty an entire tank of gas as a joke which, obviously, wasn't the case but it felt like it was at times.
Finally, after almost two hours, Jotaro stopped the car and stepped out. Kakyoin sat on top of a nearby hill all by himself, relaxing cooly in the shade of the cherry tree Jotaro and Polnareff had planted there just for him.
Kakyoin wasn't alone, tons of people were here during one of the warmer days of January, Jotaro had to carefully maneuver through the crowd laying on the ground so he wouldn't end up walking over top of anyone.
"I'm here." Jotaro said as he now stood directly in front of Kakyoin. He sat down on the ground next to him, Kakyoin was quiet.
Jotaro pulled out a box of cigars and flipped it open.
"Yeah, I know, I've got a family now, I need to quit." He told Kakyoin. "Now's a bad time though, I've got an important article I have to do on the Valvatide starfish - look I'll get off them eventually Kakyoin, I didn't come out here to discuss my smoking problem so let's just leave it at 'I'll handle it' and move on."
Jotaro lit the cigarette and blew a puff out before speaking again. He started talking about how Jolyne was doing, what Polnareff was up to, and among other things. Kakyoin listened as Jotaro basically told him where everybody was nowadays, Jotaro did this every other time he came here for Kakyoin's anniversary.
The January breeze suddenly blew roughly causing the cherry tree's leaves to rustle loudly which in-turn made Jotaro pause, what time was it? He looked down at his wristwatch and sighed, already three hours had passed without him noticing, he needed to get back so Jotaro threw what remained of his cigarette on the ground and put it out with his shoe.
"Welp, I'll see you later." Jotaro started to head down the hill but stopped. "Hold up," He walked back over to him and reached into his pocket, Jotaro pulled out a box of cherries - Kakyoin's favorite brand at that. "Sorry, almost forgot to give you these."
Jotaro swapped them out with an empty, torn box of cherries that sat on top of Kakyoin's grave. "There," He pocketed the old box and stepped back to look at the tombstone. The tombstone was still in good condition and - Jotaro coughed, he grabbed the brim of his hat turning it so his eyes were concealed.
Old memories flashed back and Jotaro coughed again as the sun began to set in the distance. Jotaro managed to get a hold of himself, he wasn't about to fucking cry in front of Kakyoin. He trekked down the hill and made sure not to stomp on any buried people again. Jotaro stepped back into his car, turned the key, the engine roared to life, and he promptly drove away.
He'd be back when it was Kakyoin's anniversary again.
