Millenium Hearts
Undeniable, inescapable, ever so reliable, and the songs would be sung from the stars and the moon, to the earth and back.
These are the Millenium Hearts.
"We don't live normal lives," Miyuki Takara told Tsukasa Hiiragi that day, somewhere far away from home, somewhere on the other side of their native shores. They stood atop the coldest, snowiest, and windiest mountain beneath a clear blue sky, wrapped in their Millenium light, beyond the grasp of the cold and wind. Back to back, Miyuki was staring out at the eastern horizon, and Tsukasa, the west. They witnessed the world's turning. They saw the shape of the earth from their altitude.
"No, we don't," Tsukasa replied. The idea of being more than human thrilled her endlessly. But at the same time she mourned everyone else. She wished everyone could have this power and feel this way. As a Millenium, Tsukasa could go places, experience feelings, and see sights that no human being alive could. Heaven, for Tsukasa and Miyuki, was a moment away. They weren't there quite yet, and they wouldn't be for a long, long time.
"We're going to watch our friends grow old and die." The note in Miyuki's voice was one of melancholy, the same kind that she exhibited the day she destroyed The End.
"Yeah..." Tsukasa agreed, wishing she didn't. There was no changing the fact that this was the price for her gift and power. "What are we going to do, Yuki-chan?"
"We'll be there for them. We'll show them illusions, we'll pretend to age with them. And when they pass on, our illusions will be done. We can return here."
"Will we be staying here?"
"Yes. For a long, long time."
"It'll be so lonely."
"Yes, it will. But we'll have each other. Perhaps it's just the beginning."
"The beginning?"
"The beginning of a new era."
"What kind of era?"
"Millenia."
Tsukasa liked the sound of that, and she disliked it at the same time. The sadness of the truth still dug at her. "Are we going to be here forever?"
"No," Miyuki said. "There'll come a day when we go to the stars."
"The stars..."
Yes, that day would come. But for now, the two Millenia, Miyuki Takara and Tsukasa Hiiragi, had human friends to be with – for a long, long time.
