Here Comes Goodbye
Prompt: Here Comes Goodbye- Rascal Flatts
Hotch sat in the house he and Emily had moved into together. He heard her pulling up to the garage. She was driving slower than usual and she didn't open the garage. She never left her car outside. She walked to the front porch and rang the doorbell.
Hotch found this odd seeing that she had a key and it was their house. He didn't know what was happening. He walked to the door and opened it. Emily had a very solemn look on her face.
I can hear the truck tires coming up the gravel road.
It's not like her to drive that slow.
Nothing's on the radio.
Footsteps on the front porch.
I hear my doorbell.
She usually comes right in.
Now I can tell, here comes goodbye.
Emily didn't say anything. She just walked up to their bedroom. She began to pack her bags. He followed her upstairs and couldn't understand what was happening.
"Emily, why are you packing your bags? What's going on?"
"Hotch, I can't do this. I'm sorry. I have to go. This just isn't working out. I'm so sorry." She looked at him, sadly. "Here's the key back." She said, handing him the key to the house.
"Emily, I don't understand."
"I'm sorry. I just can't do it." She continued packing her bags.
Hotch could already see the rest of his life. He would be in this house, crying. He'd think of Emily everywhere he went. He wouldn't be able to sleep, ever. His mind would be thinking about what could have went wrong. He wished things would never change. Just the night before, he was holding her in his arms as they watched a movie. He couldn't believe this was happening.
Here comes the last time.
Here comes the start of every sleepless night.
The first of every tear I'm gonna cry.
Here comes the pain.
Here comes me wishing things had never changed.
She was right here in my arms tonight.
But here comes goodbye.
"Emily, what changed between yesterday and today? I thought you loved me." Hotch asked, hurt.
"Things change, Hotch. I'm sorry. I just need to get out of here."
Hotch could tell by Emily's voice and her face that she had never done this before.
"I thought we would get married someday, Emily. I thought you'd walk down the aisle in a beautiful, white dress and I'd be waiting for you. All of our friends and family would be there. We'd live in this house with Jack and a newborn baby. We would grow old together and never stop telling each other how much we love one another. I guess that dream will never come true, now."
Emily began to cry. She promised herself she wouldn't cry, but Hotch's words cut like a knife in her heart. "Hotch, please- just stop. Please."
"Why are you leaving?"
"I just need to. I'm sorry."
I can hear her say, "I love you," like it was yesterday.
And I can see it written on her face that she had never felt this way.
One day, I thought I'd see her with her daddy by her side.
And violins would play, "Here comes the bride."
But here comes goodbye.
Emily was long gone and Hotch sat in his living room like he had before. He couldn't believe what had just happened. He had no idea why she left and wanted to know. She left him and he was hurt. He would move on though. He wouldn't let this get him down.
"Goodbye, Emily." Hotch whispered into the darkness.
Why'd she have to go from good to gone,
Before the lights turn on.
You're left alone.
Here comes goodbye.
