He heard the snap a few seconds before he felt it. "Fuck. Goddamn it. Sam, it's heading your way!" No answer. "Sam!"
"Busy here."
He heard a branch breaking, a roar, shots, and then nothing. He began moving, cradling his arm.
"Sam? Did you get it? Answer me – where are you?"
He found Sam next to a tree, blood streaming down his face. He dropped to his knees, and hissed as he jarred his arm.
Sam looked up blearily. "You OK?"
"My line. How's your head?"
"How's your arm?"
"Mostly broken."
Sam sighed. "My head?"
"Partially broken. Fugly?"
"Totally broken."
