This afternoon was like any other in the Cullen household. All of us "kids" were sitting around in the living room just enjoying each other's company. Jasper and Emmett are playing the latest version of Wii Sports while Alice and Rose were debating upon which bridal shops to visit on our girls shopping weekend. I was sitting in Edward's lap enjoying a fun sized bag of Lay's ® Potato Chips when it suddenly hit me.
"Blood is like potato chips." I said matter-of-factly.
"What are you talking about, love?" Edward asked, thoroughly confused. I looked up to discover 5 pairs of eyes staring intently into mine.
"Well, the way I think I understand about blood to vampires is that it is something that you long for"
"But of course, love" replied Edward. "Um, yeah Bella. Did you forget about your birthday last year when I nearly killed you?" added Jasper. "If we didn't feel that strongly towards blood than I would have easily been able to resist your paper cut."
"Okay, but all of you have reached some degree self-discipline over the years to where you can smell it and not go completely crazy when presented in front of it, at least while it is still inside the human body."
"Duh Bella! If you not, you would most definitely be dead by now. If not, Edward would have snapped your neck and sucked you dry during that day in Biology." Edward shuddered slightly at Rose's comment before he interjected, "Please Rose! Must you bring up such gruesome memories?"
She silently settled back onto the arm of the couch before continuing to flip through the bridal catalog.
"Anyway! I think potato chips to humans are a much keyed down comparison."
"Wow seriously Bella? You think avoiding drinking human blood is as easy as not eating chips?" asked Emmett between tennis swings.
"No, not necessarily. But I remember of when Edward had to drink my blood in order to remove James' venom. You said that it was much harder to stop drinking once you tasted the blood, right?"
"Yes it took all of my self control at the time in order to stop" he answered almost coldly, his face set in a blank expression. Once I noticed this, I leaned up and gave him a kiss on the cheek in order to relieve some tension, Jasper also helped by sending out calming waves.
Once everyone seemed to appear happy once more, I kept explaining my epiphany.
"Well, that is sort of like potato chips. We humans can resist them pretty easily until we have a taste of one. Once we have the legendary first chip, it goes downhill from there. You just eat one, then another, then another and another until reach for just one more and realize the whole bag is gone. It's like you don't even noticed that you just chowed down a family size bag of chips without thinking twice. Just like when a vampire gets so caught up in the taste of blood, they don't realize that they've sucked their victim clean. That's why it's so difficult to create a vampire and not just kill the human." I ended matter-of-factly.
After several minutes of complete silence I looked up from my now empty bag of chips only to discover 5 vampires staring at me like I had lost my mind.
Emmett was the one to break the silence with, "Dude, you are totally right! I mean I've never had chips before, but it makes a lot of sense. If they are as addicting as you claim."
This caused everyone to burst into laughter, even Edward was shaking from laughing so hard.
"Well love," I said as I looked deeply into his eyes "I may be your brand of heroin, but you are exactly by brand of Lay's!"
