Virgil stood in front of his mirror, staring distastefully at his reflection. His creepy pale skin, his long bangs… those stupid scales. Yeah, he had scales. Just like Deceit. Just like every other dark side. His weren't all over his face like Deceit's, they were located under his eyes, where he always covered them up with makeup. He hated them. They were ugly, and horrible, and proof he didn't belong anywhere near the light sides. He shouldn't be close to them, he shouldn't love them, and he definitely shouldn't have Roman as his boyfriend. How the heck did he even end up with Princey? What did Roman see in him? Well, definitely not these scales. There was no freaking way Virgil was ever going to let Roman see them. See his ugly marks.
Virgil sighed, reaching for the makeup on his counter, unscrewing the lid. He scooped out some, ready to put it on when there was a loud knock on his door. Virgil startled, letting out a small shriek. His eyes flew over to the door.
"Virgil? Love, what's taking you so long? Patton made a grand breakfast suited for kings, and queens, and non-binary royalty!"
"...crap." Virgil gasped, quickly trying to cover his scales with the black. "Don't come in, Roman! I'm, uh- I'm- I'm-"
"Virgil, what's wrong?"
"Nothing!" Virgil squeaked. Crap crap crap! He was supposed to have more time to put on his makeup! Why wasn't it just covering it, why-
"Virgil, what's going on?!" Roman shouted, voice laced with concern. "Why are you panicking?"
"I'm not panicking!" Virgil's voice echoed, and he clamped a hand over his mouth.
"That's it! I'm kicking open the door!"
"What?! NO!"
"Stand back, my knight in dark armor!" Roman bellowed, and before Virgil could process anything, the door was crashed through, falling to the ground as Roman rushed up to him. "What's wrong?! Who's here?! Is it the dragon witch?! Virgil, what…" he trailed off when he finally seemed to notice. Oh crap he was seeing Virgil. He was seeing the scales. Virgil immediately started to panic, covering his face with his hands.
"Don't look at me!" He gasped, shaking all over.
"Verge…"
"DON'T!" Virgil screamed. After a moment of harsh breathing, he felt hands wrap around his, easing his hands away from his face. Virgil clamped his eyes shut as the hands traveled up his face. Grazing his cheek, a thumb gently running over the scales under his eyes.
"Virgil..." Roman breathed softly. "It's… it's-"
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry I'm horrible, and ugly, and just like Deceit!" Virgil choked out. "You deserve so much better, I- mmph!" his words were cut off when Roman pressed his lips to Virgil's firmly, passionately kissing the anxious side. Virgil's eyes were wide, then he melted into the kiss, eyes sliding shut as he kissed his boyfriend back.
"You…" Roman breathed out when their lips parted, for only a split second, before Roman pulled Virgil in for another one. "Are the most glorious," more kisses, on Virgil's cheeks, and forehead. "Beautiful, marvelous," a few kisses on the neck, the ears, the nose, and finally, a tender kiss to Virgil's scales. "Wonderful treasure in the world." Virgil stared at him. "And you are worthy of every single good thing in the universe. No matter who you are, or what you used to be."
Tears streaked down Virgil's cheeks, and he let out a small, shaky sob as he pressed his lips to Roman's again.
