"Ow! Ow, ow, ow!"

Kate's eyebrows furrowed as she was awakened by the muffled whining coming from the open door to the bedroom. Burrowing deeper into the soft covers, she tried to ignore the sounds that had so rudely interrupted her blissful slumber and go back to sleep, but someone seemed to have other ideas.

The complaining was joined my a thumping sound and Kate groaned softly, fighting an inner war about opening her eyes and checking to see if her companion was slowly dying from some alien disease or just acting up to get her attention. Uttering a heavy sigh, she gave up on getting any more sleep and cracked open one eye, seeing the blurry outline of one Rick Castle hopping up and down on one foot, while holding the other in his left hand. In his right, he tried to desperately balance a mug of coffee, without making a mess of it.

"If this is your idea of a romantic wake-up call, I'll pass, thank you," Kate spoke up, making him jump even more in surprise.

He looked at her sheepishly and let go of his foot, gingerly setting it back down. "Sorry. My original plan was to sneakily open this door, quietly set down your favorite brew onto the bedside table and then maybe wake you up with a trail of kisses down your...um, you know. But then the drawer seemed to have moved during the night and attacked my toe! I always knew the drawer was a vicious beast in disguise, and-"

"Castle."

"Yes?"

"I could really use that coffee now."

"Oh! Right."

He hurried over to her side, his bad foot all but forgotten at the prospect of making her happy. Kate had to suppress a smile, as he sunk down onto the edge of the mattress, carefully handing her the steaming mug. Despite his acrobatics from just a moment before, he had managed to preserve most of the precious brown liquid. Inhaling its scent deeply, Kate sighed again, this time in gratitude, not annoyance.

Taking a sip, she smiled happily, then set the mug aside onto the beside table.

"Come here, you big oaf," she ordered softly, tugging at his t-shirt to bring him closer to her. Pressing a gentle kiss to his lips, she whispered, "The things you endure to bring me a cup of coffee. Whatever did I do to deserve you?"

She could feel his goofy grin against her lips. "You stuck with me after everyone else would have fled after about two weeks." Kissing her deeply, he rumbled, "Happy Anniversary, wife."

"Ditto, husband."
