I've been having trouble with my other fic lately, so I thought I'd try my hand at a one-shot. Give me time to get my thoughts in order; sift through ideas, etc. It's short, but hopefully you'll like it.
They danced. Spiraling around one another in circles, ellipses and helixes, they carved their way through the infinite space that surrounded and enveloped them, moving to the symphony only they could hear, and feel. The Axiom loomed over them like some great titan of old. They were, in comparison to the ship and the vastness of the universe nothing short of microscopic specs to behold. Completely and utterly insignificant. And yet, because nothing else could exist in that single, perfect moment but they, they were larger than the universe and everything in it.
They danced. EVE pirouetted about WALL-E, her robotics humming in stride, gentle and soft against the quiet of space. Music to WALL-E, who moved with the help of the fire extinguisher in his shovel-hands to her rhythm; setting his own, which complimented their song all the more. In the overwhelming silence that surrounded them, they set the beat, and every note that moved them was an orchestra of beauty.
The stars twinkled around them. John and Mary, sitting side by side within the bowels of the ship, waved at them as they passed by their window. The only witnesses to their joyous flight …
They danced until they could dance no more. WALL-E allowed his now empty fire extinguisher to drift off into the void, himself falling further and further into the darkness. Now that their joy was complete, he found himself suddenly alone … had it all been a dream?
No. Because she scooped him up into her arms, rescuing him from the quiet of space. Their blissful moment had come, lasted, and now passed. But as she glanced down at him during her search for a way back into the ship, he saw the smile in her eyes.
He sighed, content.
Another moment might come again, soon, in which their joy might be made complete once more. But for now, there was work to be done: they both had directives to obey. She had to bring the plant that was now stored inside her bio-stasis chamber – the catalyst for their dance – to the captain of the Axiom. He would do whatever it took to make her happy.
"Eee-vah …"
