When Peeta Met Rue
Chapter 1
Close Calls
Katniss ran through the woods trying to get the highly annoying and unsettling ringing out of her ears! She couldn't help but worry about Peeta and Rue as she went along. She didn't understand that boy! One minute he's helping the Career pack track her down and then he's telling her to run and acts like she's crazy for standing there! 'Sorry Peeta that I was being poisoned by mutant wasps!'
She shook her head at how ridiculous he could be at times…but then again she had to admit somewhere deep down it was sweet.
'As soon as I find Rue we're going to go look for him.' She decided as she whistled the signal…no response…she tried to keep down the panic that shot through her heart.
'No! No no no I can't lose Rue too!' She didn't know what shape Peeta was and Rue was a sweet innocent girl. She shouldn't even be in here. If she was being honest with herself that's probably why she thought she needed her so much. She reminded her of Prim. They were all too innocent and sweet to be in here.
She took off running towards the birds that she saw perched on the tree. She tried the signal again hoping-pleading for a response!
…That's when she heard it.
"Katniss!"
"Rue!"
"Katniss help me! Katniss please!"
"Rue where are you!" Rue!"
"Katniss!"
It was like her name was a lifeline for Rue. She couldn't bear to disappoint her. She knew she wouldn't leave her no matter what happened but…the idea of watching Rue's bright life drain from her eyes was too much to bear. Just the thought made her quicken her pace! "Katniss!"
She found her tangled up in that net and knew automatically in some part of her mind that this could turn out really bad. She just didn't listen to it. "Rue! Hey I'm going to get you out, you have to stay still though." She fought to keep her hands under control as she cut the ropes away. She felt a piece of her break as Rue lunged at her wrapping her arms around her as tight as they could possibly be. She automatically felt her hand run over Rue's hair (something she had always done for Prim when she was scared) the other on her back to show her she was actually there.
"It's ok, I've got you." She mumbled as Rue's shaking ceased. Just as things started to feel calm (which all in all had been about fifty seconds) Katniss heard the snap of a branch. Having the reflexes she did she stiffened immediately pushing Rue off of her and jumped up bow locked with an arrow and turning just in time to shoot the intruder through the heart and pushing Rue out of the way.
"Are you ok!" She turned panicked to Rue who stared at the sphere in shock. "That was close." She said as if she were honestly surprised it hadn't hit her. They both silently looked at the sphere that could have caused so much hurt. Finally Katniss came up to Rue putting her arm around her shoulders and pulling her along. "Come on, let's go get supper."
Authors note: So I was going to do a Thanksgiving Fanfic but I had started this a few days ago and wanted to finish it. Originally this was only going to be a one chapter thing, but after looking at the ending and realizing how much I liked it I decided to bring Peeta in the next chapter. So thanks to whoever will read. Happy Thanksgiving!
