Waiting for Nothing
Link kind of hates when she's late, but he would never tell her because he's not supposed to be practical. He's supposed to be cool and laid back, and have all the time in the world. He's not supposed to care about anything, but he does. He cares about a lot of things, but he'd never tell her about any of them. Because if he did, she wouldn't want to do this anymore, and he didn't know if he could handle it. So for now, he has to be happy with what little he has. Of course, he has more of her than most guys would dream of, but it's not really what he wants.
When he thinks about things, about them, he wonders if he could've done better. She's not what he wants, not who he wants. He wants things to be back to the way they used to be; he used to be able to tell her she was beautiful, and she would blush and shake her head and giggle. Now, she just nods politely and checks herself in the mirror, smoothes her dress out. Asks him things like does this hairstyle make her face look round, and do you think her ankles look swollen?
And then when he kisses her, it doesn't feel the same. She used to lick her lips and plant them on his, watching out of the corner of her eye to check and see that no one was watching. Used to actually care about him. Now, he gives her a kiss on the cheek and she grabs his face and kisses him hard. But it's not to show affection; it's to show to everyone that Link is hers. Always hers, and no one else's. He doesn't feel like they have anything between them anymore, just photo shoots and newspaper articles and appearances.
He feels sorry for her, but more sorry for himself. He knows that that's selfish and greedy and wrong, but it's how it is. Maybe if they just stopped all of this...but he knows they can't. If they did, people would lose interest in him. It's a horrible thing to think about, he knows, but he's content with being self-centered, as long as he stays in the spotlight. He wants to be famous, and he knows that's all he'll ever be good for. All he is is a pretty face, something nice to look at. He'll never be good at anything else but singing and dancing and smiling for the camera.
He looks at her and wants to end things. But then he remembers that she's probably the best thing that will ever happen to him, so he fakes a smile and kisses her forehead and tells her he loves her. And he'll keep waiting for nothing to come along and change everything.
