A Letter to the Past

Summary: Loki receives a letter from a past lover while he sits in his cell following his defeat on Midgard.
The letter the guard had delivered still lay on the table where it had been placed, Loki paying it no mind for a long time. He glanced at it from time to time, his curiosity finally starting to get to him. In the end he could bear it no more and he approached the table and looked at it, the writing seemed familiar and for a moment he felt his breath catch in his throat as he looked at familiar handwriting that he had not seen in a such a very long time.
Slowly, he reached down and picked up the letter, his hand trembled a little as memories of the person who wrote this returned and he lifted the letter closer to see if he could smell her perfume that she had always worn. It was there, a slight hint of citrus and rose, he breathed deep, his mind and memories going to a distant time as he remembered their time together and slowly he opened the letter and gazed upon her words, the first he had seen in a very long time.
My dearest Loki,
It has been a long time since you and I last met, and I could not believe the news that reached me of your incarceration nor the evil things I have heard and have been told by others that you did to cause the All-father to imprison you.
I sometimes think back to that time long ago, a millennium or more, to the mirage of that distant summer of our youth when we first met and were together in the mountains near my fathers estate. You would I think, be a little surprised of how much has changed since our time there together, the tower where we spent many a lazy day, still stands like a sentinel, rising out of the morning mists and the path that ran beside it is nothing more now than a faint track leading to no where.
The ruins beside that long forgotten tower still peer through the forest, silent and forgotten, like the people who once lived there and shrouded in darkness. On the few occasions when my work as a healer has allowed me time to venture back to that now forever silent place, for even the animals no longer reside in the old ruins anymore. I have often wondered what it would have been like, what you would be like now, if we had never left the safety of the tower and returned to our respective worlds and duties.
Would you be where you are now? Would I be a healer? Would the disasters and dangers that seemed to have followed you in the last few centuries have happened or not? Would we still be together? Questions that I have asked myself time and again, and more so since what I have heard of what you had done and your subsequent incarceration.
As I have already said, the tower still stands guard over our lost youth and love, standing isolated like it always did but time and the local weather has taken it toll on the old tower, the salty air of the area making its mark upon its walls and the secret path that led from it down to the lake is no more now, than a tangled almost impenetrable jungle of overgrown bushes and weeds.
I still remember the happiness that we found there and the stories that you would weave, telling me of the people long ago who lived there and how the ghosts still wandered the area, looking for something they had lost but not knowing what.
At night sometimes it is possible to still remember the moon as it cast its silver shadow across the deep waters of the lake and remember your laughter, I miss you laughter Loki, I miss you and wonder where the and how the innocence that you had vanished and you became the man you are now. People say you are monster now but I still remember you as you were and although what I heard makes you a monster, a small part of me wants to believe the real you is still there.
The loving caring you, that cared for me and for people and all the people of all the realms but more importantly the Loki that cared for Asgard, that would have done anything to protect his people and his realm, the Loki who would have done the right thing regardless of the cost to himself.
Sometimes I think that all innocence and light has dissapeared from our lives, all the love that we shared and we both felt for others especially for each other and that I am just waiting in vain for the real you to come back, trapped in my memories of the past, of our shared past but I feel that it is not in vain and that you are still you.
I pray I am not wrong and you are not as mad and as evil as people have been saying and that there is still something of you there, fighting to come back. I do not know if this letter will reach you, if the All-Father will allow you to see it or if it will be destroyed.
Life was so much simpler when we were younger, wasn't it?
I will try and write again and hope that that letter and this one gets to you and remember one thing Loki, I will never give up on you unlike those who already have.
Forever yours,
Sigun
Loki looked up, his mind returning to the bleakness of the cell, his home for the rest of his life. He felt a wetness on his cheeks and he raised his hand and rubbed at his face. His hand hand came away wet and realised he had been crying as he had read the letter from Sigun, he paused for a moment and then screwed up her letter, he went to throw it into the furthest corner of his room.
Sentimental writing that meant nothing to him but he was unable to throw it, to dismiss her words. He knew that he should destroy the letter, for Thanos would surely go after her, if he knew of Sigun and the love that he still had for her but her words, her simple words of their past love, they got to him.
Her simple innocent believe, that he was still good and would do anything for Asgard had got to him. He groaned to himself, if only her words meant nothing, did not effect him as he knew they should not but they did.
He did still feel Asgard the love she had described in the letter, the love for his realm and its people, it was why he had invaded Midgard after all, his agreement with Thanos that if he became his puppet was that Thanos would leave Asgard alone but no one would ever know what he had endured in order for them all to be safe.
Loki had to let them all think he was nothing more than the monster they believed. For their own sake.
Slowly and carefully he smoothed out her letter, looking once more with longing at her words, her declaration that she still loved him and believed in him. He knew he was asking for trouble in not destroying her words but he could bring himself to destroy them, they were all he had left.
The End
A/N: I hope you the reader liked this story and if you want to leave a review it will be greatly appreciated but please no flames as this is my first story for the Avengers fandom and I might do more for this story at a later date if there is the interest but at the present it is a one shot but who knows.
