Not Enough

It's October and the night is cold. You're slightly embarrassed because your hand must feel like ice as he holds it clenched tightly in his. It's as if he thinks that if he doesn't keep a firm grip you might leave him out here alone. He needs you tonight especially. The reflection of the castle glistens in the dark water of the lake and he sits down pulling you with him.

"It's very beautiful," you say if only to dismiss the silence that is paining your heart.

"Yes, you are," he says, smiling half-heartedly at you. Another night you would have called him out on such a cheesy line, but not tonight. Instead you just lean into him and he puts and an arm around you and his chin on top of you head. For a moment you fall into the trance induced by the sound of the water lapping on the sandy border of the lake.

"All I wish for is one conversation. I think just one conversation with the pair of them would be enough and then I could be satisfied. Then at least I could say I'd met them, you know?" he whispered dryly into her ear.

You shake your head, choosing your words carefully. "No, it wouldn't satisfy you, Teddy. One conversation isn't enough." You're still for an moment. "It shouldn't have to be enough."

"Thank you. You're right, you usually are," he said. You look at him and there's pain in his face but he tries to smile for you anyway. But there are tears welling up making his hazel eyes even more brilliant. He looks away because he doesn't want you to see them spill over.

But you can't help yourself from making your cheeks damp as well. "Oh ,Teddy."

And your words seem to really set him off because his body is racked with tremors as he cries. You wrap your arms around him and he holds you tighter than he ever has before.

"It's not fair," he utters through his great sobs. And there is nothing you can say. He's right. It isn't fair.

Because tonight he is thinking about his mother and father. And he is missing them intensely.

N/A: I actually loved writing this pairing! It was only a drabble so it was very short but my interest is piqued to try something longer! Tell me what you think or any suggestions you may have! Thanks for reading!
