Pierce wore a rust colored T-shirt, much too big for his body. The hem of his shirt reached mid-thigh, and the sleeves had been rolled up to his elbows to allow easier movement.
The boy sat crossed-legged and with pink cheeks from the steaming cup of tea he held close to his face. The morning sunlight highlighted the copper strands of hair as he bent his head over the cup.
He took a sip, and swallowed fast, deciding the liquid was too hot for his mouth.
When he lifted his head, he stretched his neck to see out of the open window.
A morning mist hung over the water that separated him from Republic City, turning the intense light caused by the spirit portal into a dull blur.
Air Temple Island was a sanctuary, away from the city, and away from the spirit wilds and portal. He had no desire to return to his grandparents' house that stood on the edges of the wilds.
Even with the water separating him from the spirits' home, there was no lack of the nearly transparent creatures floating over the people.
One spirit in particular took a liking to him, and Pierce was still trying to decide whether he should shoo it away or not... It was the spirits that did this to him, anyway.
He scratched his chin, missing the stubble that was there while he had the more mature body of a teenager.
The spirit in front of him vaguely reminded him of a weed from his grandmother's garden, green and prickly looking, though when he touched it, the thing was merely covered in a soft fuzz.
The door to the guest room opened, and his grandfather appeared, looking tired, but hopeful.
"Good morning, Bud." He said, "Master Tinzen has arrived."
Pierce nodded in acknowledgment, "I think this spirit likes me," he said, shrugged, and twirled the ribbon-like tail around his finger as the spirit turned and shook it's butt at him, "or maybe it's making fun of me. I can't tell."
Granddad smiled, "Are you feeling any better?"
"I feel... puny."
"You are."
Pierce puffed out his cheeks, looking thoroughly like the seven-year-old his mind occupied.
