THE ONLY ONE

Sara sighed and leaned against the car, checking her watch for the 5th time. It had been a long ten minutes since Warrick had told her he'd meet her in the parking lot, yet there was still no sign of him anywhere. She would've waited inside the car but she had given him the keys earlier. They would've been long gone too had Mia not stopped Warrick on their way out and told him she had something urgent to show him. When Sara rolled her eyes at her, Warrick tried to hide his smile as he nudged her towards the exit, promising her he wouldn't take long. She guessed she could go back inside the building and hurry him along, but the thought of seeing Mia flirt with Warrick made her sick to her stomach.

Sara had sworn to herself some time ago that she would never be a jealous girlfriend, but it was just shameless how some women came on to Warrick even in front of her. There was never a formal announcement, but it was no secret either that she and Warrick were seeing each other. She'd think people would know by now that they were getting serious, especially since they've been arriving for work or leaving the lab after shift together, but that somehow didn't stop others from hitting on him.

In Warrick's defense, he has never reciprocated. He would turn a deaf ear to other women's innuendos and smile politely or brush it off, depending on the situation. And whenever he had to turn someone down, he'd always mention Sara. So she knew he could trust him. But Warrick has always been the object of women's attention at work, and sometimes, even Sara wondered how they ended up together. Only sometimes, because Warrick loved to tell her how beautiful she was and how she was the only one for him. So, rationally, she knew she had no reason to be jealous.

Sara's thoughts were interrupted when she saw Warrick finally emerge from the building. When he spotted her from across the parking lot, he sauntered towards her, his leather jacket slung over his right shoulder.

"Sorry," he said, when he was within earshot. "Just had to tie a few loose ends."

She shrugged; her expression deadpan.

"Whatever. Maybe she can give you a ride home."

Sara knew she was being silly and unreasonable, and she hated herself for it, but she couldn't help how she felt. Maybe it was the hot weather. Or maybe it was the stress from the dead-end case she worked on that night. Whatever it was, it was no reason for her to take it out on him, especially when he did nothing wrong.

She was about to apologize for snapping at him, when Warrick surprised her by placing a hand on her hip and pressing her gently against the side of the car. She instinctively raised a hand to his chest, when he knotted his fist in her hair and tilted her head up. He grinned at her bewildered expression before leaning down and kissing her thoroughly - right there, in the parking lot, for God and the whole world to see. It was a good thing he had Sara pinned to the car, since his kiss and the feel of his body against hers made her weak in the knees. And if she wasn't mistaken, she could've sworn a couple of people who passed by whistled at them.

When he finally let her go, she dazedly saw that he was smiling down at her.

"You're cute when you're jealous."

Sara shoved him away, and he laughed. She hated to be called 'cute', but Warrick gets away with a lot of things and he knows it.

"Shut up and take me home," she told him, no longer in a foul mood, as she walked around to the passenger side.

In the car, Warrick gave her another lingering kiss before starting the engine. Sara smiled to herself, all thought of Mia and him making her wait forgotten.

Warrick always did know how to make her feel better.

THE END.
