Craning her neck up at the clouds in a fashion even Shikamaru would approve of, Hinata daydreams.
She would often fill her head with images of blue eyes and bright smiles, the energy which he radiated, and the confidence which he reeked of, making her heart go pitter patter and her lower lip quiver with the desire to kiss him and capture this spirit that was Naruto. She wanted him regardless of what she was supposed to be, precious little Hinata. Sometimes she wished he would touch her in ways she had only read about , and heard from Kiba much to Shino's dismay. Stretched out in the sunlight, with head tilted towards the sky in her innocent display of cloud watching, she felt a growing warmth in a certain place she couldn't deny, this burning which she loved yet grew frustrated with since she couldn't—wouldn't—do anything about it.
She could imagine the look of surprise (perhaps horror) if Naruto ever knew she sat in the sun thinking semi-perverted thoughts. About him.
Precious little Hinata, indeed.

Lying underneath the stars, Hinata ponders.
The grass, cool and damp underneath her hands, refreshed her mind, clearing away the heated thoughts of earlier. Picking out the constellations up above, she thinks how stupid fate is. Nothing is ever certain. People change, circumstances change, and a whole world can shift in a blink of an eye. She knows this because she knows herself. Change, the only constant in the world. With age comes wisdom, with wisdom comes understanding, and also bitter disappointment. This is what Hinata realizes.
Her sight is remarkable, and she knows this. But her perception of the world—that, she could do to improve upon, for sight is one thing, and seeing is something else entirely.
But with age comes wisdom, with wisdom comes understanding. And with understanding Hinata realizes she isn't the Sakura that Naruto seeks. She's dark and a little weird, but wonders if there is a bit of a Sakura in her as well.
Hinata grows out her hair.
Naruto goes away to train with old Jiraiya.
And she stands atop the trees every night squinting at the horizon.
