Beep…beep…beep…beep…beep…beep. I slammed my hand down on my alarm clock and groaned. Today was the day. I'm finally going to meet my mother. After 18 years of wondering, I'm finally going to get the answers to all of my questions I thought I would never have answered.
I used to think my mother left my father and I when I was 3 years old. Th
at's what my father told me. He said it was because she was a wanderer but that didn't answer my questions. Why didn't she ever visit? Why did she just disappear? I didn't know. Because every time I brought her up he would clam up and walk away. So I just stopped.
Finally on my 17th birthday I brought her up and when he attempted to do the same thing I pushed. I told him he couldn't keep it from me forever. He had the saddest look in his eyes. I almost let it go but I couldn't. I had to know.
Flashback
"Dad please!" I pleaded with him. "I have to know. You can't keep this a secret forever." I told him.
I knew he could see the determination in my eyes because he sighed with defeat and sat down at the kitchen table. I went and sat across from him and waited patiently for him to begin.
" You're mother was a very unpredictable person. She didn't care what other people thought of her. She did what she wanted. When we started dating I thought she was the one. She made me so happy. But after awhile I started noticing things. Small things at first. I would look into her eyes and there was no emotion. Then one day my best friend John and his girlfriend Stephane came over. We decided to watch a movie and get some pizza. I went out and bought at little caesars which was about 30 minutes away while Renee and them stayed at the house. When I got home Rene came out running and screaming. She kept trying to tell me something but I couldn't hear her through her crying. I walked inside and the site stopped me in my tracks. I stood frozen as I took in the scene before me." He took a deep breath and closed his eyes.
When he opened them there were tears in them. He opened his mouth and closed it. I waited for him to speak again. " John and Stephane were on the floor. Dead. They had been stabbed to death. When I took my eyes off of them and could finally move I ran to the phone and called the police. The next week they were taking Renee away in hand cuffs. They said they had to much evidence against her. They also found out she was wanted for 15 other murders in 15 different states. Her real name was Melissa Berk. I couldn't believe it. I fought so hard against it. I wouldn't let myself believe them. But when the day came to go to court and she admitted it I wasn't shocked. I guess I just didn't want it to be true. She was pregnant with you so the judge allowed her to go to suomenlinna. One of the nicest prisons in the world. She would be guarded 24/7 until you arrived. Then they would send her to ADX. And that is where she is now. And that is why I never wanted you to know." He finished talking and got up. He walked over to me and put his hand on my shoulder. " I love you Bella. This doesn't change who you are. Your nothing like your mother." He kissed me on the forehead and walked away.
I just sat there frozen. Unable to get up.
End of flashback
I won't tell you what happened after that. I will only say I wasn't myself for a while. But it's been a year and I have come to understand that my dad was right. I am nothing like her. I could never kill anybody.
Today I am going to see her because I want to know why she did it. Why she would risk never seeing me. Why she is the way she is.
