Reasons for betrayal.
Peter Pettigrew had always felt left out of the Marauders. After all, with the tall, dark and handsome Sirius, loveable rogue James, who got away with everything because he was Head Boy amongst many other things, and the exotic vulnerability of Remus, how could Peter ever hope to be as popular as them? He was a tag along. One to make up the numbers. He wasn't particularly bright. He had struggled immensely with the secret animagus training, and had nearly compromised the group because of it, when he was nearly caught trying to change in his dorm.
Also, he didn't have the confidence and bravado of the other three. He was short and dumpy, and nobody paid much attention to him. His mousy hair, small eyes and pug nose didn't win him the massive amounts of dates that Sirius and James had. In short, he was bitterly jealous of his cohorts, especially James, who along with being an excellent Quidditch player, won the most grades and house points, was also madly in love with Lily Evans - Peter's life long crush.
It was no surprise then that Peter decided that enough was enough and started secretly meeting certain Slytherins with 'connections'. He quickly became a valuable member of Voldemort's circle, divulging important secrets. After all, no one suspects a mere rat, do they?
Then his golden moment came. James and Lily, who had recently married, which was a fine affair, he had to admit, and who had recently had their first child, a boy, named Harry, were becoming more of a problem for Voldemort. They were powerful adversaries, and had to be stopped. And Peter's moment came.
Sirius Black, forever loyal to James, thought that it would be better that somebody less in the spotlight were to become James and Lily's Secret Keeper. Their protector. He chose Peter. Good old solid Peter. Never let them down in all these years, when you couldn't even trust your grandmother, let alone childhood friends in these troubled times, but Peter would never do anything. He was Peter.
And so as the flames licked higher on the ruins that were once James and Lily's home, with the baby screaming on the lawn, with the scar that would forever brand him as Voldemort's bitterest foe on his infant forehead, and the beautiful Dark Mark floating over the ruins, Peter Pettigrew couldn't help but feel a sense of relief wash over him. He had effectively stopped the charade that he had played for too long as the loyal friend to his Master's enemies.
Now all he had to do was to finish his plan. Destroy the Marauders. Starting with Sirius Black.
